OK, this is whata I got:
https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/vortexIV-Elite/
Chassis & Display

Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-4800MQ (2.70GHz) 6MB
Memory (RAM)
16GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card
2 x NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 780M - 4.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
Memory - 1st Hard Disk
1TB SEAGATE HYBRID GEN3 SSHD Drive, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (5400 rpm)
2nd Hard Disk
1TB SEAGATE HYBRID GEN3 SSHD Drive, SATA 6 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE (5400 rpm)
1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive

Battery
Vortex Elite 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (5,800 mAh/89.21WH)
Operating System
Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit w/SP1 - inc DVD & Licence

It scores 7.9 (which is the highest possible score) for graphics on the Windows Experience Index, and nearly as high for CPU and RAM. Only the disk performance lets it down.

I didn't get it just to run MineCraft though! I'm going to be alpha-testing a new game soon and it will need 64-bit windows and some serious graphics power to run.

Awesome thanks sounds like a pretty good laptop

Also, I believe that was Wagon's way of telling you no. You need something else. That Dell Inspiron 5558 lacks in both ram and CPU and wouldn't be sufficient for most packs. Especially the large kitchen sinks packs like DW20 or Infinity.

EDIT: Oh and the intel graphics (in most Dells) are not good for gaming in general.

a) No, it's 2.5 years old.
2) So what? Laptops are as popular as ever.
γ) If you're saying people shouldn't post on an old thread, why are you posting on an old thread?

a) Close enough
2) Didn't say they weren't
γ) I didn't say that.

The thing to remember is Minecraft is more CPU intensive than it is GPU. Educate yourself about pc specs and then buy the best you can afford.

For the larger packs these days (ex. InfinityEvolved), 8GB is on the edge/border of not being enough or being barely enough. 16GB is still plenty, though. In summary:

4GB : not enough for most packs
8GB : might be OK, depending upon pack
16GB : should be plenty

CPU vs. GPU for Minecraft, *always* spend on the CPU and go cheap on the GPU. Don't sacrifice the CPU to get a fancy GPU. MC is a CPU-intensive game. Most of the 'rendering' work is done in the CPU in Java, before it hits the GPU and is truly rendered.

Server-side is of course 100% CPU and 0% GPU.

@PhilHibbs those specs are only slightly behind what I am running on my laptop, my processor is just slightly faster than yours. If you cannot get MC to run on your rig I would bet money you have a java problem, not a hardware problem. The most common thing I have seen with people is they are not running the correct version (64x or 32x) or their machine.

I run Infinity on max settings (160 base mods I think) and can run Kortex Komplete (220 base mods I think) on max settings just fine.

Just putting this out there, I managed to get this running on an alienware alpha with an i3 and 4gb of RAM at a pretty solid 40-50 fps. I'm sure I could get 60 if I tweaked the settings a bit. Windows 8 64bit. It cost 450$ if anyone's looking for a cheap way to run this!
