LAN mode or servers

Hi, I am new to these forums, so I didn't really know where to put this:

I have been playing FTB blood n bones for 4-6 weeks now. I am very experienced. But me and my friend wanted to play together on a world/map which hasn't yet been exploited/used by others. When I opened it to LAN he couldn't join. We both had FTB BNB installed.

Can you please tell me how I can play with my friend. (Like do I download something or is there a server IP or is there a bug or other)?

So please answer my question and help me out. Also do the poll so I can get a better idea of what you think. Thank you!

Are you two in the same location(I.E. House)? LAN will only work if you are in the same house.

Well we were one meter away from each other and both had FTB BNB and were both on same wifi. Weirdly enough we also couldn't do LAN in normal MC!

try a direct connect.

1.both connect to the wifi. (i reccomend ethernet, but wireless works too)

2.open your search files/programs thing. (in your start menu)(i am assuming u have
widows7 or 8 with classic shell)

3.search "cmd"

4.click on cmd (icon looks like this)

it should open a window that looks like

(not exactly like that, but you get the gist)

5.type in ipconfig/all

6.find the line that looks like IPv4 Adress.........:*numbers*

7.write that down. (remember, this will only work if you are connected to your wifi/ethernet)

8.start BNB.

9. open your world to LAN.

10. in the chat it should say "local game hosted on Port *numbers*

11.write those down.

12.on the other computer,(remember to be connected to the wifi) in the multiplayer menu, select "direct connect"

13.type in the number you got from step 6. (the underlined part) (do put the dots)

14.put a :, then the numbers from step 10.

15. your direct connect window should look like this.
*numbers from step 6*:*numbers from step 10*
(Example: 127.0.0.1:25565)

16.hit enter. you should be on, if you are on the same wifi.

17.if that didn't woork, tell us what it said after failing to connect.

It's possible in some cases that you could be on separate subnets... For example, Xfinity (Comcast) now supports two separate Wi-Fi networks on my cable modem... My private SSID and "Xfinitywifi", a new "free public" access net intended to expand their generally available (sub)urban metro net. My private SSID is on one subnet and Xfinitywifi is on another, neither of which can route to each other to protect my private data. This is done intentionally by Xfinity for customer security.

To be on the same subnet you would have to configure the visiting PC with your SSID and Password and let your router assign an address (DHCP), but this isn't advisable as it gives your "buddy" (BFFs are NEVER "forever"...) the keys to your whole network even from outside the house.

An easier way around this if you are near the router and have ethernet ports available is to connect using ethernet, or get a crossover cable at your local electronics shop and plug in ethernet port to ethernet port on the PCs.

that is why i recommend ethernet, but, my Router has 2 wifi networks on it aswell, i just make sure we are on the right one.

Yeah. I even go so far as to filter my private SSID to only allow devices with specifically entered MAC addresses to use that Wi-Fi subnet.

Years ago I actually had a freeloader (next door neighbor) be concerned about my internet the day I installed DD-WRT on my router and enabled security... It seems he couldn't get to his porn sites anymore. I lied and told him I got rid of cable and installed the Satellite dish to save money and went to the apartment's free 2.5 mb/s 802.11a network... I did get rid of the cable TV but kept the internet, actually

To avoid any possible confusion. by MAC I was referring to the hardcoded address built into all modern Network Interface Cards (NICs, even though most are built in these days). MAC is an acronym meaning Media Access Control.

In many routers you have to set an option like "WiFi clients may communicate between each other" or similar in the WiFi config menu.
