Just watched the Applied Energistics 2 mod spotlight

And all I can say is "wut."

Why on earth are we making the mod that brought us simplification through simple automation more difficult to automate?

Really, I'm steaming a bit. Some of the new 'features' seem neat but in all honesty I don't know what to think about AE anymore. It's resource-throttled. You have to do a TON of pre-exploring to find materials you need to even get started; no longer is digging a small hole and gathering up normal stuff going to yield you a start on your ME network.

All I really have to ask is: why?

I wonder if the transition plane will be (or has been) given a filter so it only picks up items of a certain type. That combined with a dropper (or a modded equivalent) will allow for the complete automation of crystal forming.

Eh, one meteor should give you everything you'd ever need, outside of the random loot chest. That random loot chest, however, I agree is a major "wat?" Luckily, cheat mode exists for a reason.

Call me a masochist, but I kind of like many of the new changes. It's a bit more in tune with how data transmission/routing works, however simplified it may be. It provides us engineering types with a problem to solve, something too few mods these days offer.

In the age of one magic cable fits all with no power loss over distance I'll take it.

I actually asked Bevo about this before Dire used subnetworks in his SSP series. What you do is have a subnetwork that can only store the final products collect the items with the plane, then have the subnetwork eject the drops into your main system.

Thats cool, and if that's how it is meant to work I am fine with that. However, don't transition planes have a single item buffer? I'm assuming that its not a problem and Algo sorted it out, I just want to make sure.

I think the whole intent of the changes was to make AE a late game mod, so that you have to use other storage and sorting means early on. As it should be.

It's an overall improvement, while I find channels an odd and artificial hurdle it does provide a mental challenge to an otherwise plain utilitarian mod. You also have to rember that this isn't AE it AE2 it's a similar yet different beast.
Much in the same way EE2 and 3 are vastly different in power.

However I see the meteor cast loot thing being a PITA ONLY on SMP servers that have been around for a LONG while. The mechanic seems like a rather unnecessary cock block.
But when you investigate how molds are to work you realize this is only a small tribble as the molds are replicatable apparently.
On old servers that have been thoroughly looted you may have to bug the vets to copy you the required molds with a iron block, that or forgo AE entirely.

Edit: Also old server admins that know what they are doing might set up a trade sign with plugins.
