Sorry to be spamming the forums lately but I'm getting minecraft out of memory. This could be caused by a bug in the game or by the java virtual machine not being allocated enough memory

specs
3.5 ghz intel core i5
8GB 1600 MHz ddr3
AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2048 MB

I have tried allocating anything from 2-6 GB of ram in the launcher.

I've reduced render distance even though I have played it at around 120 fps. I've tried with and without optifine 1.6.4 HD_U_D1. I'm using direwolf 20 1.6.4 with x128 sphax

This is both client and server side. It is a new machine and I've had trouble with java version as Yosemite wants java 8 but that's not supported by ftb. I currently have java 1.7.0_72

Please help

maybe you should use lower resolution texture pack?
some people (like you) couldnt run mc without 8GB allocated when using sphax 128x.
also there is a small fix that makes ftb (forge) compatible with java 8.

Surely I can run 128 textures with my specs ? Was considering adding a further 8 gb ram but not sure. Only just bought this machine and was considering taking it back to get the same model but an i7 instead. It would be a different graphics card and am not sure it it would be better or not

I'd have thought given I have 2gb dedicated graphics card and 8 gig it would be more than enough. That said the direwold if 120 odd mods including tinkers and I've added chisel and carpenters blocks and statues

If you really want to have sphax128x you only need more ram memory, your other components are more than enough. :)

Ok great thanks. So if I add a further two 8 gb to give me 22gb total (just checked and have 4 ports for ram. 2 currently occupied by the 2 4gb then should be all rosy. Also I'm assuming this would drastically improve fps when I try to record screen video ( currently verrrrrry leggy)

This generally wont improve recording speed no, that is dependent on your video card, cpu and HDD speed not the amount of memory you have.
If you are using a high res texture pack, combined with a heavily modded minecraft pack you will need a top level i7 and good graphics card to record without lag

What is the exact error message? Does it say out of permgen, or something else?

You say client and server fails. If you are running a stand alone server and it runs out of memory it is definately NOT the texture pack that is the issue.

First have you checked to make sure you have actually configured the memory in the java control panel?
