I do recall having had some issues with older versions of Java installing updates in a way that eventually broke everything -- I've come to the conclusion that trusting the updater is just asking for trouble.
You want to have Java 7, where update 65 seems to be the latest. First uninstall any other Java showing up in Programs and Features, to try to prevent the old ones from sticking around, then grab the right download from that link I just posted (probably Windows x64, unless you're pretty sure you're on a 32-bit machine).
After uninstalling all Java via Add/Remove programs, also nuke all traces of it before trying to reinstall current Java.
It's easiest just to search the C:\ drive for Java, it can shotgun itself all over the place. It's never had the cleanest install/uninstall. Look for folders named "Java"
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Oracle\Java
C:\ProgramData\Sun\Java
C:\ProgramData\Oracle\Java
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Java
C:\Program Files\Java
C:\Program Files (x86)\Java
Etc,etc,etc.
Make sure "hidden" files and folders are shown.
[username] is your Windows user name
You don't want to remove the Java folders in Adobe, OpenOffice, or LibreOffice directories (if you have those installed) .
Download page for full install versions: https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
I have both 32 and 64bit versions installed without issues (I need both), just make sure the FTB launcher is using the 64bit one.
Options -> Advanced Options, path should be C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe NOT C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe (Unless you only have a 32bit OS)
