Okay, so my computer is -dead-. By dead, I mean 'The Power Supply, which I was already going to replace when I got the cash, finally gave up, and fried pretty much everything'. So yea, very dead. Motherboard has scorch marks. It is pining for the fjords. It has ceased to be. This is an ex-computer.
Sorry, I think we were moving into another skit there. Ahem... moving on.
Well, SINCE I'm going to have to buy pretty much a whole new computer anyways, I'm going to build myself a decent computer. One that can actually run everything I want.
Well, first off, I'm a big fan of Antec, so I am looking at this tower with this power supply. That should at least prevent the sorts of shenanigans my old power supply pulled. Yes, it's an 850. Yes, it's a little over-engineered, but really it isn't all that much moreso.
So, first I need to look at Motherboard and CPU/Processor. So, I am browsing motherboards, and find this ASUS board, because I'm a fan of AMD, and dual-processor boards are smexy. Plus, $124 is not a bad price for a board like this. For the CPU, since I've got a pair of slots, I might as well get a pair of these. Sure, it's only an AM3 not an AM3+ chip, but it's still a quad-core chip with a decent speed and cache. Besides, the board can handle up to the Phenom II's, so I can always upgrade this later if I need better processing. But this should more than handle minecraft + recording. This is why I pick up an 850 Power Supply. Dual processors are power hogs.
Then I need to check out the RAM. Well, I don't have a lot of cash, so I'm probably going to skimp and get something like a pair of these. Sure, it's only 8 GB, but that should be more than sufficient for me now, and I can upgrade to an amazing 32 GB when I want to.
I'll check to see if my poor GPU survived, and check my hard drive as well.
So, all together, I'm looking at around $530 for an 8-core around 3 GHz processor and 8 GB RAM. It's got tons of space for upgrades, and will last me a good long time. It far outstrips any 'prepackaged' computer in that price bracket, mostly because I'm a Penguin, so I don't need to spend an extra three hundred or so on the OS, then another couple hundred on the software packages like MS Office.
So, whaddya think? Should it at least permit me to record Minecraft without lagging the hell out of myself?
