So I have 3 tier 5 soul shards: Blazes, Zombies, and Skeletons. I stuck them all in a giant box, carefully engineered (meaning, I actually died several times while building it... don't ask) for the purpose.
For the benefit of science, and the community, I offer some info that everyone but me probably already knows.
1) One melee turtle can't really kill them fast enough. Thank goodness for the throttled spawn rate on those shards. Fortunately I didn't stick them too high up so that they are out of the radius before they get to the kill spot.
2) Conveyor belts are awesome for this purpose. Better than flowing water, I think, lag-wise. They are also *extremely* hard to get off of, even for the player. (Remember what I said about killing myself in the box... yeah...)
3) Putting quicksand at head height at and near the killing spot does seem to kill them off faster. Just make sure you dont fall in the box without a fully charged jetpack... (see earlier notes about dying ...). Even with a jetpack, getting out of the quicksand is... hard.
4) Some times the mobs warp out of the box, but get sucked right back in. I think it's some sort of graphical/movement glitch related to the conveyor belts. They can't hit you when they come out of the box (or vice versa).
5) Building something like this will absolutely *murder* your FPS. My computer is quite a beast and if I leave the spawners on for long, my fps plummets to where it's unplayable. I actually built one side of the box with glass at first, so I could watch the mayhem ensue, and then I tried covering up the glass to see if that would help frame rates. It seems to, a little bit, but it's still bad.
I have some screenshots, but they just show the side of a big cube. If anyone really wants to see those, or the inside of the box, just ask.
