All,

Hi, I'm new to FTB but having a lot of fun. I know the absolute basics about industrialcraft, but when it comes to electricity in virtual reality, or reality, I'm at a loss. I'm trying to set up machines properly, and I think I'm ok with my low energy devices, but I crafted NanoSuit armor today, and I can't charge it. I've got an MFE, but I don't think I have it wired correctly because the generator is not buffering, the batbox is not charging, and the MFE is charging really really slowly. I've got gold cable connecting the three machines (I took the rest of my machines off the grid). Can anyone explain this to me like I'm a two year old? Youtube videos are not helping. I can set up a quick private server for testing, or if you've got a server I can pop on and see how things are wired, that works too. Any help would be appreciated. By the way, I've got just a regular Generator. I plopped a geothermal generator down on my test server to see what would happen, and the MFE did nothing.

Thanks,
Bryan

Hiya Bryan

Honestly its almost unusual to see questions bout IC2 these days. May I ask what pack you're playing?

You might have luck going into a "test" world and cheating in the various items. That said:

The MFE should work just fine. Make sure you put the item into the top slot.

If everything is wired correctly, your generator won't buffer at all because the MFE can "eat" power faster than your generator can generate it.

Your batbox is basically unnecessary. In fact, if you're generating more than 32 eu/t, your batbox may "choke" the system. You can direct your geothermal directly into your mfe (with or without cables) and that will work fine.

If your MFE is gaining power, and your nano armor is in the top slot, it should charge properly.

It is in the top slot. I don't think I have it wired correctly. I tried on my own server and gave myself the generators I'm using, and even tried geothermal generators, but it still takes a long time. I have a feeling I don't have it wired up correctly. Movies and documentation say it has to be showing a certain way (the icons), but I can't figure it out.

I'm playing on an Infinity server. I just started a couple weeks ago -- before that I only played vanilla. There are 161 mods, and I was just thrown in. I posted a message earlier today getting advice on armor I can craft at an early stage, and noted that I had some experience with IC2, so it was suggested I go Quantum -- I'm at the Nano point now.

Oh, my previous post won't post right away, but right now, I am trying without any wiring. I just put two generators on either side of the MFE and put a ton of coal in it -- no batbox either.

If its getting power, you have things aligned properly. There's no way to send power "improperly" in the latest versions of industrialcraft.

The armor shouldn't even go into a machine that won't charge it.

Hop into a creative world, place down an MFE, a piece of Mine Factory Reloaded Rednet Energy Cable and a Creative energy cell. The cable will convert from RF to EU. Now take an uncharged nano-suit chest piece and plug it into the MFE. It should charge. If not, try an MFSU.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Can you drop some screenshots? Its easier when we can see what's going on.

If you're using smaller (low voltage) generators, then your MFE will appear to charge slowly due to how much energy it holds. Feeding it 32Eu/t from a batbox will take a long time to fill it. (imagine filling a swimming pool with a garden hose).
Likewise your generator and batbox will only store power when they have nowhere to send it.

Ok, I did both and it just takes a long time to charge. I'll be patient.

I started a game in creative mode, set up two geothermal generators next to an MFSU, and it still takes forever to charge. I did search around the Interwebs and found a video to just add redstone into the MFU to give a major boost to charging. I did that, and am very happy with my small generator and MFU. Thanks for the help, everyone.

It sounds like things are working perfectly. Charging nano suit armor with the generating options listed is going to take a long time as the nano suit holds 1m EU.

For me you can't seriously get into the meat of ic2 without building a basic nuke. There are some very simple designs that are completely safe and produce 40-360EU/t.

A geothermal generator , supplied with lava via universal fluid cells will generate 20EU/t (400EU/s). The MFE has a capacity of 4,000,000 EU. So 10,000s (2h47m) is expected.

Good to know. Thank you. I'll keep producing bigger and better generators, and hopefully a nuke unit soon. This mod pack just has too much to offer, I wind up doing twenty things at once.

Big banks of generators is the way I usually started. I would have a tree farm feeding coal powered generator banks making 200 eu/t, then graduate to geothermal, then the oil/fuel powered etc then on to the bigger solar units which i preferred over nukes. Beware the nukes turning your base in to a crater. The blastproof blocks are a must.

Seriously why?
I mean, if you build a MK-I reactor, there is literally zero chance that the thing can misbehave. I build containment chambers from blastproof blocks for aesthetic purposes eventually, but, while setting up, Ive had the nuke just sitting amongst my other machines like a regular generator :p

So, this page hosts a Reactor Planner: http://www.talonfiremage.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/v3/reactorplanner.html
It most likely won't work in a modern browser as between Google and Oracle they have decided to murder browser Java. So get the standalone jar.

I typically build this reactor (paste this into the "Paste URL" field) of the planner:
21p7ds7vjmjmikz2x7yalk5j41rorwl4blmveksfvisvvhsy4xsqnvxeu3qzawd5sw46apa50fo5on4
because its easy to remember, and scales from 60 to 360EU/t by simply tiling the 3x3 pattern like so:
21p7ds7vjn8d4rrg5euena0j0anwpzg6htlhsimjcpx8euo7vanxsw1tyzpyn937yanitgqobvulw5c

(There also is a 5x5 reactor multiblock that can be built around a basic reactor if you get deep enough into this. That converts EU production to steam production which you then pipe out to steam generators to generate EU)

There is in fact a very real chance that a "safe" reactor can meltdown. I personally had my base cratered by a very safe reactor that I had built several times. I had a lot of fun playing with the reactors up until the meltdown. But really, reactors can't touch solar for power, safety and lack of maintenance.

I used this site when building reactors http://forum.industrial-craft.net/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=8966&pageNo=1

Looks like my security settings are blocking the angel fire recipes :/

Wonder if a reactor block straddling an unloaded chunk boundary could do it.

And obviously a "safe" 5x5 could fail cataostrophically if it doesn't get coolant, although that's not really the discussion.

When starting a new map and starting IC/2exp, I build a very direwolf20 9x9, with a row of IC2 machines. My nuke goes right there. As a single block that can put out 120EU/t. In the room with all my machines and storage. It hasn't failed yet. And I don't see how it could.

I can totally buy the idea that a multiblock nuke, extending over a chunk boundary, could dynamically re-assemble as a smaller nuke missing some critical cooling components.
