It is the color of obsidian, but it has creeper-like faces on it. It does not seem to want to kill me, but since I am 2k away from my base, and found a cactus to bring home, I do not want to find out the hard way that it can one hit kill me.

The construction is a small Obsidian Pillar from Thaumcraft. It will have a aura node above it, and the material is used in the end-game aura mechanics.

seeing as you're new to the mods, you should consider installing WAILA to help you

@ Op, I would advise not using F7 while exploring & if your frame rates suffer that bad with rain lower your particles & draw distance, it should help a lot, the original question has been answered so no need too.

If you find a multi block structure made of the same block & obsidian steer clear until you have some iron equipment or are at least skilled at avoiding whisp strikes, but mark it on map for later inspection, theres a chest in middle that can have some tasty items even a portal gun.

I have been playing with Railcraft, Buildcraft, and Industrialcraft for about a year, and have been adding one mod at a time to my repertoire. Have not yet gotten around to Thaumcraft (or Ars Magica, or Xeno's Reliquary).

thaumcraft research can get tedious.
that structures from thaumcraft and doesnt do much until the end-game stages of thuamcraft.
theres a multiblock version made of the same stuff with a big node (which spawns wisps, which hurt, and is invisible till you get the goggles of revealing) and a goodies chest.

The bigger obsidian totem structures actually have a wisp spawner below the pillar the chest is on, but you'll have to mine the pillar or dig under the platform to get to it, though. If you break it, only the wisps from the node will spawn, which is a lot less threatening.
