Okay, I've been searching far and wide. I have FTB Ulimate, and when I hold shift on an item, I get this little menu ontop of it. Saying it's 4 quickness/2 flame/ etc. What mod is this?

Thaumcraft, it's informing you of the Essentia values of the item, which is needful for research and crafting.

Yeah, those are for Thaumcraft. Take note of what has what should you decide to delve into it, because it's seriously not fun searching through two dozen chests or several storage drives of stuff for one particular symbol. If you're interested in more, it's all in game in the Thauminomicon, which is made with a wand on a bookshelf. Wand is diagonal line of gold nugget, stick, shard. Color or 'type' of shard doesn't matter.

And yes, it's overcomplicated at first, but it's worth the effort if you go there.

You'll latch onto a few items that you always fall back to for certain aspects. Rubber = 2 impertio, 2 motus. Books for knowledge, of course, and so on.

I'm pretty sure plain paper also has knowledge, saves you having to get leather.

Also Natura berries and cotton are nice single aspect items.
My favorite is rubber though, it'll get you to golems really quickly once you get through the first tier stuff.

It took me ages to realise that I could use flint and leather as easy sources of the tool/armour aspects. Who was making loads of shovels and iron helmets? This idiot right here.

Levers and buttons are nice too for on the cheap.
And opinions about DartCraft aside, force nuggets for magic aspect (precantatio? sp) are big win. Single aspect, means no overflow. Probably should have a touch of metallum on it, but eh.

I did that as well xD I was always so frustrated to put those tools into the research table and see them disappear with 1 click while yielding no progress at all xD

Hey man, easy, I didn't even know you could use flint for them until I read your post. I made leather boots and wood shovels, never wasted iron on it.

I always made stone tools using the bazillion or so cobblestone that you generate just walking around the world, much less mining anything. :D

They are thaumcraft aspects, the essence of what the items are made from.
They are loose latin word, ones you can't say properly without putting on a Italian accent...
Precantatio!
Mutatio!!
Fellatio!!!

Also, if you have BoP, you can use the muddy armor for all your tutamen needs, and muddy tools. I have a sludge boiler, so I end up generating tons of mud with nothing to use it on.

Using a factorization or dartcraft for in-hand crafting makes wooden tools way less tedious than leather and flint for tool aspects. Armor always is terrible.

Thaumcraft is the only mod I know that almost requires a cow farm to get anywhere. Of course since it provides the necessary automation itself...
