I just ordered the parts for my gaming PC and wanted to know how well I would be able to run FTB Infinity. I chose an i5 4590 and a GTX 960, which is great for gaming, but I've heard that FTB Infinity is a VERY heavy pack that really pulls down fps. I've seen a gtx 970 struggling to keep 45 fps in some situations, but that doesn't make sense to me. Would I be able to max out the video settings or would that be asking for too much?

Your CPU is more important than GPU for MC. I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head, but if the clock speed is greater than 3.5 gHz, you should be alright. MC can't take advantage of multiple cores well, so keep that in mind.

Should run just fine. 3.3Ghz proc will run MC pretty well. You'll need some RAM as well, probably 2-3Gb dedicated to Java for the application.

Yep, I'm getting 8gb of ram so 3gb can be allocated for minecraft. Also the i5 has a boost clock of 3.7ghz which will help. What about the video card though? Will I be able to have max settings?

I have an fx-3500 oc to 3.7 GHz, a gtx 760ti, and 8gb of ram and 4 ish gb allocated to mc. I do get frame drops now and then, but mostly I hover around 50 fps.

An i5 should be reasonable for running modded mc. An ssd will lower some frame drops that occur when loading (not generating) chunks

As to max settings, with a 960 you should be pretty good. You'll actually be better off when mods move to 1.8

Edit: spelling

Should run fine. i have an i5 4690k at 4.2ghz, 8gb ram, and an AMD R9 380, most settings high with 12 chunk render dist. I get like 60fps when loading/generating chunks and 95fps idle after everything loads. Playing Direwolf 20

You don't need that GPU for max settings, it's a bit overkill for just MC. You'll be fine.

That's because integrated graphics steal ram and CPU cycles from the system to function... Just make sure you disable the integrated graphics in BIOS if you can as even though you have a basically stand-alone video subsystem the on-board video will continue to reserve a chunk of ram if not turned off.

Yeah I did. For some reason my pc wouldn't show any display with my new gpu in so I had to remove it, boot bios, disable integrated graphics, then put the gpu back to get it to work. All's well now though :D

Cool... I've seen cheaper systems that allow both integrated and expansion GPUs to run simultaneously, touting the ability to run dual screens...

I believe my girlfriends laptop has that feature. Using the integrated for anything and everything it desires to save power, and using the nvidia only when you force it to, or when the nvidia drivers detect a known game or gpu intensive task. Works well I suppose. I feel it could be better implemented. But. We are a bit off topic and I think we answered the question. OP, you can close the thread so we stop blowing up your email :D

what modpacks can i run
Intel(r) Celeron(r) cpu j1800 @2.41ghz
ram 4.00 (3.89)
64 bit operating system
this is all i know

i want to play direwolf20 and infinity

I don't think you can run direwolf. It took my brothers laptop 25 minutes to load the pack with 4gb ram and it takes a good 4 of my 8gb total on my desktop. I'd say try it. But if it doesn't work then go ahead and download your favorite mods and make a small personal pack with just the very best mods and play single player. I did that for a while and it wasn't too bad

It looks like you have 4GB ram installed but only 3.89GB available? That indicates an integrated graphics setup, which steals both ram (256MB) and CPU cycles from the system, in addition to not being optimal for Minecraft. Also, a Celeron isn't the newest or fastest CPU available. I'm guessing this is a laptop, most of which will fall short of providing reasonable performance ( > 20 frames per second, or FPS) for Minecraft, at least. This is due more to the way Minecraft is written more than being a hardware flaw.

As a breakdown, and this is purely assumption:

1). you have 4GB (4096MB) ram installed... Start by subtracting 256MB for a parasitic video system = approximately 3.89GB (3.84GB but manufacturers fudge numbers by swapping between actual binary amounts and rounded off decimal approximation when it suits them)

2). Assuming Windows 7, subtract another 1-1.5GB Ram for the OS. 3.89GB -1.5GB(worst case) = 2.39GB

3). I'll give the benefit of the doubt and assume you aren't running a browser or e-mail or some-such in the background... That also uses ram that won't be available for Minecraft.

If you're trying to run a pack based on an older version of Minecraft, like 1.4.x, 1.5.x or 1.6.x you should be ok. Packs running current version 1.7.10 and upcoming new versions based on 1.8.8 will require more ram... Both the current DW20 and Infinity Evolved versions have over 150 mods and seem to be happiest with 3-4GB available strictly for Java/MC to use.

You aren't playing anything but FTB Lite with that CPU and amount of RAM. At least, not well.

That bodes a bit better for you... Most laptop chipsets do not run at optimal speed for the sake of battery size and life as well as total weight and cooling. Dell uses integrated graphics in their lower-end desktops because most such systems are sold primarily to businesses who are more interested in their staff's productivity than graphics performance.
