An alternative, is a launch track. Takes a little work to get the timing down to jump out and engage glider, but it's lots of fun.

Yeah, even if I have the ability, I find that the game becomes much less fun once I can just fly anywhere I want. Of course a little flight is nice to have, especially in the Nether.

If I didn't have flight, i'd never go into the nether.

Or anywhere that involved crossing an ocean.

Literally no.

I've taken to adding Archimedes ships for ocean voyages. The boat controls suck, and they're slow. Plus I can't add storage to the vanilla ones. Archimedes I can make them as large as my computer can handle. Plus I can build a 'construction pad', and fly around that way.

I find Arch. Ships to be quite interesting so I there was a time when I had in the game but I never used it, because I never had any reason to build a giant ship and use that to move.

My first experience with it was way back when Horizons was the first 1.6 pack to show up. At least that I noticed. And it was so much fun I kept adding it. Nothing like taking everything you need with you and sailing across an ocean to set up a new base.
