How to repair Tinker's Steelworks steel armor?

Playing Agrarian Skies, I made a set of steel armor from Tinker's Steelworks but I can't figure out how to repair it.

I tried putting the pieces in an anvil and adding steel ingots but it had the little red X and didn't work. I also tried repairing it in a workbench like the Tinker tools but nothing there either.

Is there a method I'm missing?

Last i checked, you could melt down damaged armor. Try remaking it.

Pretty much that. Once you've played long enough to not only make steel armor, but have it long enough for it's damage value to be non-trivial, you should be swimming in the resources you need to just make more steel. Alternatively, you could add the repair enchant via Thaumcraft.

Yeah, it was more curiosity than anything else. Plus I had some enchants on them and I thought it might be easier to repair than disenchant, remake and re-enchant

You can use the mariculture anvil. Just right click it into it and keep whacking with the blacksmith hammer until it's done(you'll know because you'll see and hear a fake explosion). This does take experience.
