As long I been here (three months) I have yet to touch a tech styled FTB modpack. Normally I would play something like World of Farmcraft, New World, and Magic Farm. I don't know how to use any of the mods in tech styled modpacks, how did you learn to use them?

Direwolf20 (on YouTube) is always a good option for the individual mods (Thermal Expansion and Tinker's Construct are two of the big ones you'll want to get started with right away), his spotlights are incredibly helpful in explaining how things work. Generikb and BDouble0100 are also good choices for figuring out some of the medium-level technology and automation (even though they're using the Mindcrack pack, which is somewhat outdated).

Aside from that...experiment, and when you have specific questions, ask around here on the forums--it's sort of what we do. :)

I started my learning back before FTB was released. I was messing around with technic and read a lot of those getting started thread/guides. From there is was just a matter of trying out new machines and reading about them as I tried them.

Probably not the best way to go about it anymore though.

Direwolf and other LPers are probably one of the best ways now. Ideally you want somebody who will actually explain/show stuff as a new player to modded minecraft.

Step 1) Run FTB
Step 2) Go through NEI and make the machines. Figure out how they work. Experiment.

Nope, that's one of my features that makes me unique even though a lot of people hate it when I do that including SatanicSanta (That's why he liked your post :p).
You must be new to forums since you use the quote function incorrectly.

Despite the Mindcrack pack being outdated, lots of things don't change. That said, as much as I like Bdubs and Gb, Gb's voice grates on my nerves after a while. I like Etho and Vintage Beef, though neither of them goes terribly indepth. Iskandar here, who's currently Laurence M, on Youtube, also has a slightly outdated Industrial Minecraft series, which I really like. And he does lots of explaining.

Go into NEI and type in @thermal This will show you all of thermal expansions machines. Take a look at the engines and pulveriser. Thats step one. It helps you double your ores. Thats imo step one. Once you start there you will find out these tech mods allow you to do so much more then before as far as automation is concerned.

Tech mods I like that arent in FTB... Lets see my first would be EnderIO its new but it allows for multiple conduits in one block. I also like galacticraft. Compact windmills is a cool ic2 addon. A mod I REALLY love is quarryplus but thats also a little raw. Redlogic for your gate needs. redstone in motion for your frames. Tubestuf by immibis, it adds a neat crafting table as well as a buffer (acts as chest and redstone engine in one). That would be my tech mods I use that arent in FTB. I know there is also the universal energy mods.. Like mechanism, atomic science etc. Technically MPS and galacticraft are apart of that set of mods. Does that help?
