I started a new Unhinged world and I think I'm missing something. How do I get steel? It requires a Blast Furnace, which requires materials from the Nether. But to light (open) a Nether Portal, you need a Flint & Steel, which on the Unhinged pack literally requires Steel...

So to get steel, I need to go to Nether. To go to Nether, I need steel. o_O

I noticed I can also obtain steel by smelting steel items and I plan on smelting some steel boots I found in a dungeon chest. But is this the expected method to "unlock" the Nether now, or am I missing something?

Hunt until you find Steel [anything], smelt, access Nether...?

I'm not complaining, I'm actually quite enjoying Unhinged so far.

youre gonna need the GT industrial blast furnace.
fortunatly, you can do it with the standard machine casings and no lava in the middle.

IIRC, Greg said that steel is only available from dungeons until you get to the nether

also you can go to the nether without flint and steel if you still want to do that.

Make your portal frame. something that burns like wood next to the opening light it. The fire will spread onto the frame and open a portal. It can be random so i migh take a few tries.

Also a fire charge will work you can make those fairly easy and sometimes find them in chests.

I need a regular blast furnace. Not an Industrial one. I don't think the Industrial one helps with producing steel.

I didn't know there were alternate ways to light a nether portal. I'll try this. I actually did find some fire charges in a dungeon chest also.

Thanks!

EDIT: I must be doing the fire charge wrong. I tried 10 of them in various ways and the portal didn't light. I'll just smelt my steel boots :( Also I think that indeed Greg intended the Nether to be off-limits until you find steel in a dungeon. Because even if fire charges worked, they take blaze powder to craft. So you'd have to discover them too since you can't craft them until you can access the nether.

theres a steel recipie in the industrial furnace.
NEI helps a lot with finding recipies.

Put a dispence on the side and use it to fire it into the portal frame.

heres a crapy youtube video I googled up that will show you what I mean.

[DOUBLEPOST=1374981467][/DOUBLEPOST]for the record this sometimes fails in SMP. A better way is to put a block in front of the portal and the dispencer behind so that it fires at the block and goes off inside the frame. I usesly do this with two dispencers behind my portal one with fire charges and one with a water bucket and use a piston to raise the block the fire charges hit on. This makes my portal somethign I can turn on and off in my base. You know so pig men dont come bother me.

Love this design and will be copying it for my world. Thanks!

How would you get a fire charge in the first place if you can't get to the nether to obtain the blaze powder?

Yeah I mentioned that in one of my edits above. It seems like Greg intends the Nether to be off-limits until you stumble across steel or fire charges via dungeons or jungle temples or whatever.

The same way Greg apparently expects you to get steel if you can't get to the Nether to obtain the components necessary to create the blast furnace needed to create steel, pray to the Random Number Gods to bless you with both a dungeon to loot and the items you need inside.

You can somehow get your hands on Chainmail equipment and uncraft them in the Uncrafting Table to get Fire blocks. No idea if you can light a portal with those, though.

You don't even need the obsidian. You can just get a bucket and some blocks, cut out a mold in the wall, then pour a bucket of lava into one spot. Instantly put a bucket of water on it to make it obsidian. Repeat until you have a portal frame. If you mess up, you have to either break it with your fists (It's possible, though it takes quite awhile), or make another portal frame elsewhere.

I don't know if Thaumcraft is in Unhinged or not, but its cinderpearls (desert flowers) give blaze powder.
Dartcraft, if it's in there (probably not, knowing Greg), allows you to collect fire blocks directly, by clicking them with a Force Rod. It also lets you convert chainmail into iron ingots, which I recently reported as a bug.

But, in any case, I had heard that the intended progression in GregTech was Basic Industrial Blast Furnace > Steel > Nether > Better Industrial Blast Furnace.

Neither are in Unhinged. Dartcraft was only ever included in 152 No GregTech for whatever reason. Thaumcraft was in 152wgt, but is excluded from Unhinged.

You know Greg's very own blast furnace doesn't require steel, right?

I do, and it fits Greg's usual MO of trying to force players to use his machines for even the most basic vanilla tasks, but neither choice is an appealing one, you can either pray to the Random Number Gods to find a dungeon with either steel or fire charges in order to access the Nether or you can expend an obscene amount of resources (read almost 200 refined iron, over a hundred rubber, and a whole slew of other resources to construct the most basic industrial blast furnace possible) and supply it with a constant 128 EU power source due to its lack of internal power storage just to get access to flint and steel.
