I get the impression that the more mobs each shard has, the more pronounced the boost. I'd be interested to know how the "two kill" T5 creeper shard works, though.

Never had that happen with me.

Well, I'm not sure what you're doing differently from me, but I just tested it to see if it'd changed. 1 kill shard + 1 kill shard = 124 kill shard.

Easy to verify in a test world if you don't believe me.

every time I tried this with the anvil, it only added the death count.

no, this has never happened to you.
Vanilla minecraft durability mechanics say that 1 + 1 = 1.1 or whatever.

Having the anvil add the death counts together would take dedicated coding to that effect. As this is clearly not the case then you are either mistaken, or lying.

It's a mod interaction exploit based on a different bug with a different mod in the ultimate/mindcrack/direwolf pack.

I am doing this as we speak. I am getting a blaze spawn, had an extra chicken, both tier two, gave me tier 4. What I did see this time was that there was 50 more then I had killed. Maybe this thing does happen to me and I just didn't notice...
Sorry for conflict...

I set up a machine for this recently, which works by repeatedly pulverizing sandstone to get niter, which is crafted together with sulfur and charcoal dust (fed in manually, since they're generally quicker and easier to get) to make gunpowder. The sand supply comes from pulverizing cobblestone from igneous extruders, which produces gravel as a byproduct, which I process further into flint dust. Flint dust can be used to increase the efficiency of the iTNT recipe (5 per 3 TNT instead of 4 with plain flint). Works pretty well, but took quite a bit of effort to set up. I show it in detail in this video (starting around 4:45):

That's the Thermal Expansion way. There's another option with GregTech if you have a lot of excess ender pearls: Smelt/pulverize/macerate them into ender pearl dust, put that into an industrial electrolyzer for nitrogen and potassium cells, then use those in an electric crafting table (along with compressed air) to get saltpeter dust. The electric crafting table is necessary to get the cells back; otherwise, you'll be burning through tin to make cells each time you craft saltpeter.
