Heya!

My computer is quite decent, and my server (where i play alone) is also VERY decent.

My issue (i think) its network based, but would like suggestions on how to improve it and verify its effectively a connection issue.

The issue is mainly when logging in, or when changing dimensions, basically nothing responds for about 20 seconds (i can walk/run just fine, but chests wont open, mobs wont move, etc). Then everything moves at an accelerated speed for a couple seconds and more or less stabilizes.

I still get spikes of non-responsiveness that last a few seconds (specially when using AE interfaces, which i think are heavy on the network).

i may also get smaller versions of this lag when traveling quickly (like on the advanced jetpack) even on already-explored terrain.

if possible i would like myour opinion on this issue, if its actually the network, and any advice on whatever measures i could take to improve this would be awesome!

Thanks!

Is your hardware decent too? Whats your connection?

I have 30mb/3mb connection at home, and the server has a symmetric business-like 1mb connection to the internet.

Try checking for dropped packets. If you're on a Mac, you can use nettop (Lion and Mountain Lion only).

If you're on Windows, I have no idea.

was the "LOL" really necassary? Did you laugh even a little bit? Or did you just feel like your knowledge was that far superior that you had to rub it in. In capital letters no less!
Obnoxious is probably the most accurate term here.

Nothing like that.

Yes, I did laugh because it reminded me of our server. The sysad is so goddamn paranoid, he disabled ICMP replies on the firewalls. Now when we have connection issues, he tries to ping it.

See now that's alright, the way you had it before made it seem like you were taking the piss.

yeah, i tried a ping -t

This is the result: (blue arrow is the point i log in, red arrow is when the game, inventories, etc start responding)

Am i correct in assuming the ping response is delayed because the log-in process is eating all the bandwith? That would prove its a connection issue wouldnt it?

You got it. Hop onto http://www.speedtest.net/, your ISP might have lied to you.

ah your connection is around 30 times better than mine. Yay...

Connection quality (ping) and quantity (bandwith) are two VERY different things. Im MC required less than 1mb (wich seems to not be the case) a 1mb business connection would be far better than my 30mb home one :)

This is at 3am. My net speed is greatly affected by the time of day as it is mobile broadband.
morning/afternoon/evening is much slower.

I have 30mb/3mb connection at home, and the server has a symmetric business-like 1mb connection to the internet.

Server:

PC:

You internet speed isnt relevant,
1. the ping to the MINECRAFT server is (ping to some speedtest website is also irrelevant)
2. as well as the server tick rate (should be 20).

Ping your minecraft server, and then check if the server is getting tick lag due to being overloaded by (probably) mass entities somewhere or bugged mods.

Minecraft takes very very little bandwidth to work properly (under 10KBpsDown/5KBpsUp if the world is loaded). If you are saturating your upload bandwidth doing something, that will cause major lag in all net related activities.
