How many blocks per second does a quarry mine?

or cheat with an anvil and add fortune to your advanced diamond drill, or protection to the underpowered quantum armor

I can see why they were made more expensive, but that just adds a big gap between mining manually and mining automatically.

All it does is make you waste more time mining. IMHO mods should increase fun, not make it more tedious to get to the fun parts. I personally love automating things, I need resources for that. If quarries (and the IC2 equivalent) would be removed or unobtainable I would probably not play anymore at all. To each his own of course, but for me it just adds tedium.

Since a quarry takes "mine" out of "minecraft" I think they should be removed together whit everything that auto mines for you...

So, Railcraft, Steves Carts and Redpower should be axed then? Just to spend more time mining and less time building machine systems?

It's all nice to pretend you're some kind of 'hardcore' player who enjoys the tedium of mining for hours on an end but you're not fooling anyone. Mining isn't fun if you have to do it for hours on an end.

It is while you explore caves doing it.

Exploring caves which is SOO much fun? Guess you're easier to entertain than I am. I've been playing MC since Alpha and I kinda have been doing this "exploring" enough. I'm playing FTB because it adds to MC and gives new stuff. Not to do all the old stuff again and again. For me there is no challenge in repetition. Once I've done something I want to do new stuff. Not do the old stuff 100 times more.

I would tend to agree with chrono, caving is one of the few fun parts of the vanilla game for me too.
The other one would be discovering nice landscape, but it can take a while for this.

Of course, after a while, caving can become boring, especially when you don't even need to be careful off creepers, fall damage or lava.

I'd never looked into it previously but I'd love the idea of a mod that specifically added stronger mobs at lower mining levels (below 30). The only thing comparable right now is cave spiders, which given how they tend to get stuck trying to climb over the mineshaft sections aren't a huge threat usually.

Why are you on FTB forums if you don't even like the idea behind it?

P.S. I play other mods/packs aside from FTB. I like varying play styles. TerraFirmaCraft and FTB are basically opposite playing styles, yet I play both of them.

Actually his most recent updates added a way to generate EU from enchanted materials like thaumcraft shards and the nether star. He also added a way to generate EU from Aura Nodes themselves, but it can cause a great deal of damage to your aura nodes or backfire badly.

The GT hate and support responses have made it difficult to determine what is sarcasm and what isn't.

We have hit GT Poe.

Wait until you try Ars Magica. Exploration isn't optional if you want spells beyond the basic initial set and you can't cheat by looking up recipes on a wiki because they're randomized every time you make a new world. Find the various abandoned wizard buildings for spell recipes. :D

Just don't ask about the NPCs and how dangerous life becomes. Hard mode is hard.

I personally like caving now and again, though less and less, not to mention in different ways, the further I advance in the game. Considering the things I've added, this current run is going to be a real killer experience for a long while. :D

This thing sounds really great, before I check the usual places for info (mcforum, wiki, spotlights) anyone have a recommended read for it?

Ugh. I really wish there was a word on if Ars Magica would be in FTB soon, because I'm hesitant to add it to my game since if I set the item and block IDs to one thing and then an FTB config gets released it would create issues. If it was part of FTB, I could steal the config from whatever pack it is in, and if it wasn't going to be part I could add it myself (mostly) confident that there wouldn't be a later itemid change.

Until then, I'm stuck not exploring the overworld much more than I have because as you point out, worldgen is going to be important in Ars Magica.

Not sure how this became about GregTech or Ars Magica, but as for the quarry...I don't think it's overpowered at all. It takes a LOT of consistent power to run it at a decent rate, and you also have to implement an entire system for sorting and dealing with the massive amount of junk resources (dirt, cobble, etc.) you're going to get. Once you get it set up right, though, it's awesome to just let it run overnight and wake up to tons of resources.

Personally, I think strip mining for resources is the most boring thing ever in Minecraft. I prefer to get the majority of the "mine" part out of the way at the beginning, then get a quarry going, and then get to work on the "craft" part.

Interstingly enough though, it's actually true!

Also, playing with GT hard mode and honestly don't see why people are fussing about the recipes so much. So far my only major problem has been getting enough iron, and not too long ago on my latest world I got my normal blast furnace and made my chainsaw and drill. I currently can't decide if the next thing I should make should be the industrial blast furnace so I can make silicon plates for slightly easier advanced circuits (get the cells as a bi-product of obsidian > iron) or if I want to get the industrial grinder so I can get some platinum dust and smelt those with the half stack of rich slag I've built up. Both would be relatively easy considering my town's blacksmith just got stocked with diamond axes and most of GT's recipes can use the diamond dust that you can get from pulverizing them.

I guess the major problem with it really does have to deal with if you're near a village or not, since the trades from villagers work very well with GT's functionality.

Same for me. Especially in the start you're just hunting for diamonds basically and the most efficient way to find those is just mine in a straight line at level 12 and hope you run into caves that stay below layer 16. Once you have iron armor the cave critters you meet aren't a threat anyway.
