How is your spawn protection setup?

So I have recently been thinking of ways to setup some protection against people griefing the server.

Ultimately I would like the entire world to be available for everyone to log in to but have white listed people as the only ones that can modify/change the world. Much like network permissions for windows Read (everyone) and Read/Write (Whitelist).

I am currently unsure of a way of doing this so maybe we can get a post rolling about how others have spawn protection setup or shed some light on how it would be possible to do my original idea.

My spawn is protected by a /setregion spawn command from http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1484373-142smpfihgus-command-mods-for-vanilla-server/ I also have a command block set to /gamerrule mobGriefing false to prevent people from dragging creepers inside the spawn to blow it up. And finally I setup sentries from Portal Gun Mod to kill any mob that enters the spawn area.
