setting up a minecraft server can be a little difficult. Depending on your needs you might need to set up a Vlan to himachi server etc... I have played with it and found its best just to outsource it. I went with nitrosnetwork and they offer servers for as little as £3 pm. no fuss and set up in seconds.
If you are wanting to do it yourself then 2 things. 1: we would need more info on how you are wanting to host the server and 2: whether or no its dedicated or a shared machine(do you have enough system resources to run the server?)

moasseman is most right then. probably the best solution would to use himachi although that does seem a tad overkill. just to clarify, you do know how to identify your machine IP adress right? by going into ipconfig in the terminal. If you are having problems connecting to each other you might want to disable any firewalls or antivirus software you have running (including windows firewall). just make sure that you enable them again before you go surfing

We both have hamachi open and running, and are in the same network, but the lan game does not appear on the multiplayer list (yes i opened it to lan) I'm not sure what to try next, i tried joining with the ip too but alas no use

sounds like your two machines are having problems communicating. have you tried disabling any firewalls? i know i had issues with a lan set-up which required me to turn off windows firewall and Avast protection. They block the incoming signal unless you authorize the application.

I assume you're using windows7 of some kind SergeantSpears, if so, please follow these instructions regarding Hamachi and boot your computer afterwards, then try if it works:

Go to Control panel, find "Network and Sharing center" (might be different name if you're not using small icons, changeable from top-right of control panel) -> top-left choose "Change adapter settings" -> right-click Hamachi network and select properties -> click "internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and select properties -> bottom-right of new screen click advanced -> bottom of the advanced settings there's "interface metric", which most likely is 9000 for you atm, change it to 1 -> restart computer for changes to take full effect.

I suggest doing this to both of your computers.

http://nitrous-networks.co.uk/minecraft - for £3 you cant go wrong. also they have free 1 hour trials.

If you wanna set up your own server i suggest some research/reading up on. It can be more difficult than setting up a lan over himachi so chances are you will encounter the same problems.
