Hoping To Do This Right For Once: RAM Allocation

As the title suggests, I'm hoping to allocate the correct amount of RAM / GB / whatever to my modded MC for once. I've normally allocated it 4 GB, but Omicron has posted some stuff saying it never uses all of it, and it piqued my interest. So I'd like to know how much RAM to allocate.
Details:
Processor: 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Software: OS x 10.8.4 (12E4022)
If any more details are needed, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks for helping, I'm a complete computer noob.

Hm...that wasn't what I was looking for, although it's good to know that it's there. To clarify, I had read somewhere in one of Omicron's posts that allocating 4 or even 3 RAM / GB to FTB was a waste, as it never used all of it. Given my current system, I was merely wondering how much RAM to allocate to MC accordingly.

I personally have 5gb allocated through the launcher which gives me no issues. If you planned on using a few chunks loaders depending on the size you could use up a fair amount of ram. I would suggest allocating between 2 & 5gb which you can change at anytime.
