I am new to FTB mods, i like the quest that Crash landing gives becuase its kind of like a tutorial for me. (shows me what to do next) But i have played it over and over and over again(probably 20 times) making it to the 3rd or 4th day. Then boom, i die from 1 creeper explosion.

Where can i turn down mob damage just a tad till i get better with the mods? cant seem to figure out which mod that is from. If anyone knows, it would be much appreciated, thanks.

Go to the configs of crash landings and find the hqm config file. Find the line that mentions lives and set your default lives to 255. Now it doesn't really matter if you die because you have more lives. Also, you can try removing special mobs, zombie awareness, and/or hunger overhaul to reduce difficulty a little since you appear to be learning. Please note I'm on mobile and apologize if none or some of those aforementioned mods aren't in crash landings :)

Yeah, I looked at your avatar and thought you looked familiar.
This is why I suggested maybe Direwolf20, or even Monster pack would be a better place to start.
Crash Landing is meant to be brutal. It's part of it's... charm?
If you really want/need (tbh there is no real need) for the quest book, wait a bit. The Jampack stuff should start coming out more and more.
I would also remind you, that in a LOT of the HCQM packs (that's the one with the quest book) the recipies and difficulty levels have been messed with.
Just ask anyone who played Agrarian Skies......
So you may think you are learning the mod, but you are only seeing it as someone else's tweaks and redesigns.

What do you mean the "Jampack" stuff will be coming out more and more?[DOUBLEPOST=1408406651][/DOUBLEPOST]Also i understand why you suggest i start on direwolf or monster, but i just don't know where to begin. what to build, what to work for(After i make a house. I have no idea whats out there, which is why i like the quest. the recipes may all be tampered with i'm assuming, but it's showing me what is out there you know?

There was a rather large competition where the common forum members made modpacks using hqm in a challenge map style like agrarian skies or crash landings. Many of them are actual challenge packs meant for seasoned pack players rather than tutorial-style packs. If you are learning the mods, I recommend ftb lite 2 due to the smaller mod count. Once you feel like you understand the 'core' mods' mechanics, I'd move to dw20 or monster for a bit to practice mod interaction. Then, I'd go to a challenge custom pack because those are fun.

They are, and they aren't.
The recipies are not what you will find in a regular modded MC pack. Hell, even between Jampack packs it will be different because the quest book is filled in by the person putting the pack together.
Your "guides" are leading you astray.

The mod is a blank slate, and the quests are made up by anyone. I've heard word that some folks are talking about making guide books with the HCQM to teach modded stuff, but that's not my style :)

Like it was suggested in the other thread. Sure, make a house, then pick a mod... We suggested Thermal Expansion and or Thaumcraft. Go from there. If you are new to modded MC then these two will keep you occupied for quite some time.

Again, I want you to enjoy your FTB time. This community is great, and the mod packs are well done! I just don't want to see happen to you what I've seen many new to modded MC folks do.

Yes, yes. Good points all around, but mainly this. This is why I suggested ftb lite to start with, because, frankly, it's rather difficult for one to get in over their heads in that pack. It does its job though. Wonderful for people with crappy computers (me) and beginners. Now it's time to go play yet another skyblock because it's the only thing my computer can run *sigh*

Above all, have fun, and stay forever on these forums. We really do try our best to help everybody, and you seem like a likeable person :)

Trust me i won't go back to vanilla MC, not after all i have seen thus far. So okay thaumcraft and thermal expansion. But what is unclear is what do i do? what should i start trying to create with those mods? any basic setups or somethign i can attempt to make relatively easy?[DOUBLEPOST=1408409137][/DOUBLEPOST]What kind of goals can i accomplish with these mods?

Doing the mods "tree" or trying to progress fully for it for that specific reason will make you extremely bored and unhappy after a while. You should play modded minecraft like vanilla almost. Try to make buildings with it, use the tools it gives you to do so. Make amazing creations.

With Thermal Expansion, set up an ore doubling system. Look at pulverizers and redstone furnaces. Learn how to power them then go from there.
Ore doubling is always a good thing, and will get you interested in other ways to get more ore out of your.. ore...

Thaumcraft on the other hand, you could follow the tech tree with it and discover new and useful tools/items along the way. The scanning of things to get aspects (you will learn about this LOL) Kind of gates you off from trying to do end game stuff too early in the game. Many threads are out there on what items to scan and in what order to open up as much as possible.

With both, make sure when you are googling them to look at the correct version.
Normaly I google (Mod pack name) (mod) (version)
So, if I was looking up something for Thermal Expansion I would search
Direwolf20 Thermal Expansion 1.6.4

I'd like to see somebody else even use the thaumcraft ore doubling mechanic... I feel like I'm the only one who's even used it, let alone automate it!

Edit: not a project for starters btw

Oh I loves me my Infernal Furnace, I use the pick axe of the core on all the ores I have a chance of getting those lovely Thaumium nuggets from.
If I get the Thaumcraft version, in the Infernal Furnace it goes!
If I get the normal ore block, into the pulverizer!

TBH, I mostly use the Infernal Furnace to cook up food :)

A decent midlevel project for a newish thaumcraft user would be to fully automate essentia production.

Basically because it opens up lots of cool toys you can make with the infusion altar, and it's a project you can either do entirely with thaumcraft items OR with all sorts of crossmod stuff.

is there in game books for all mods? if so how do i unlock them?
There is for some mods. Most notably Rotarycraft (not recommended for beginners, as it uses a lot of complex mechanics and math), thaumcraft has the thaumonomicon which is created by using any wand on a bookshelf. Botania has one that is found in almost every bonus chest and can be created with a book and a sapling. I'm probably missing some of them as well, so if anybody else has contributions, they would be appreciated.

Edit: mariculture has several and so does tinkers construct.

Tinker's Construct gives you a book when you log into a new world for the first time. Same with Openblocks (If you have these mods in your mod pack, they will be in your hotbar when you spawn in)
As stated, Thaumcraft's book is made by using a wand (you can look up iron capped wand in NEI, but most other Thaumcraft items won't show the recipes, they are all in the book once you research them)
Thermal Expansion doesn't have an in game book. But there are many, and I mean MANY guides/videos out there showing how to at least get started. If you need some help with TE, ping me or send me a PM and I'll point you in the right direction.

Oh yeah, I'm open for pm and pings as well. I tend to stop what I'm doing to respond to PMs, so if you run into a wall, I'll respond as long as I'm awake :)

Copy cat!
LOL

Oh, and for "what should I be working towards" question..
Again, it's all down to play style. TE is a gateway drug.. errr.. mod into industrialization/automation and Thaumcraft is the crack cocaine of magic mods.. Honestly.. I've been up to 2am going "oh.. what's one more research..."

Start by trying to do stuff that will make your Minecraft life easier.. Ore increasing methods, interesting tools (Thaumic tools are "mid game" for Thaumcraft, but trust me you will like them), automation.. all the tenants of FTB are based on these three things.

Once you delve deeper into these things, you will see by reading/watching guides or let's plays that other mods interact well with these two. This will lead you into other mods to learn.

You don't have to master one, before you can move on to another. Hell, I just finally (for the first time ever) opened up all available Thaumcraft research.. (still missing KAMI stuff tho'.. hrmmm.. need to scan stuff...)
