I have been playing Minecraft for about a year now, and I have been forced to restart this game like 12 times already. Each time I start a new one, I'm looking for the one world I can commit to and build on for years.

But I'm wondering at this point if I'm chasing the dragon. No matter how many seeds I generate, I'm always looking for a better one. No matter what mods I'm using, and perfectly happy with, I'm still wondering what it'd be like if I installed *that one* instead.

For example, I just made what is hopefully, finally, the world I wanted. It's on a beautiful tropical mountain range with a great view from every angle. And I'm *still* here thinking, "but, could it be MORE beautiful?" lol. Does this ever end??

What's the longest you've gone with the same survival world?

And bonus question, who's got the prettiest seed/worldgen mod combination out there? (And if you like a good view, what's the best combination of mods. BoP? With ATG or no? Any other combos out there that might be worth it?)

I've got to say, with a really simple 1.10.2, I found that the seed number "404" turned out quite nice! On one side of a river, with a village on the other side; temperate looking spruce forest, but with birch nearby, large body of water in one direction, acacia plains in another, and even desert a day and a half's walk away. I've used that seed for all my testing of 1.10 stuff because I liked it so much! :) That has no BoP, no Quark, nothing like that, so more complex world-altering mod combos might lead to it looking very different.

Only 12 new worlds in a year? I've generated more than that in a single day! Of course, getting spawned in a Deep Ocean biome and drowning before I could swim to the surface didn't help things... :D Also, I don't like spawning on a lone island where there isn't enough room for a bed, even if sheep and a tree had spawned and I dislike entering "cheat mode" to fly around for real world hours looking for a decent land mass :D

I also developed a habit a couple of years ago of regenning a new world every time a pack update occurred to avoid all the block ID errors.

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't have the time to get hung up on worlds when so much used to happen to make regen the quickest solution.

Hahah, well, in each of those worlds, I generated dozens of world that I immediately dismissed, but that was 12 attempts to stick around with the same world. There was always SOMEthing that made me start over. Almost exclusively related to multiplayer, though. And now I'm doing it single player, so I want this one to stick.

The perfect seed is a myth. Sure, some features close together are optimal, but that will inevitably space out other features/biomes. Compromise is the name of the game. I've found a number of fantastic build sites on every world I've played, and only actually built in less than 10℅ of them. It's the reason why our server has so many generated chunks - I'm an explorer (as well as a hoarder, but I'm trying to work on that).

Keep in mind too that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. On one world, a buddy and I were exploring together with basic jetpacks and hanggliders (1.7 Infinity, pre-evolved). We happened upon a BoP Crag biome centered between a TC Magic Forest, Cherry Forest, Desert, Brushland and Savannah. After scouting the area, we were both blown away by our find and agreed to build there together. It wasn't until we went to break ground that we realized the features we were so blown away by were on opposite ends of the Crag. We had entirely different visions of completely different projects. Ultimately, we both built on our sites, but with a central hub between us that provided ore processing and mass storage. Even two people on the same SSP seed will settle in different locales, either depending on or defining the build they have envisioned (which will never be the same as anyone else's vision).

In the end, it's not what you have, but what you do with it.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
'Perfect' seeds- had a few. Designed the best looking myst ages, rummaged through terrain gen mods and the vanilla seed-dex thingy. I tend to hit a burnout point very quickly as I feel I can't really do them justice.
My best runs come from finding 'nice' or 'decent' or 'bars closing- you'll do' areas- and working with whats there. I still can be very picky sometimes- but perfections what you build out of it, rather than the hand you're dealt.

Longest world: 20-22 months. (Going by the forum posts the SMP server/world itself lasted at least 26 months).
"I'm going to give this Infinity:Evolved thingy a spin. Don't worry- I'll be back to finish the dragon alter and nether fortress"

A little trick to keep a world going; don't rush- try to finish an individual sub-build and make it look cool before climbing the next rung (even if it'll be obsolete later). You'll find you base develops around you, and your build style will change as more materials/aesthetic options become available.
By example- your initial manual farm; try open water channels for irrigation, line them with stone to make nice edges. Build it off from pre-existing water sources so it looks more natural. Later on you'll have an automatic one, but the manual will still be a part of your overall build.

For my taste, the world generated by the 'realistic' setting included by Quark is always perfect. Had 3 so far (they die due to to much lag or a stuff up somewhere) and they've all been a nice mix of terrain that I find appealing. For the server I just copy pasted the settings from the reddit thread.

Other than that I had a nice world in 1.4.7 perfectly sized grasslands valley with a village surrounded by desert cliffs, mesa, mountain jungle and an ocean. The flat area was the perfect size for the biome changes to be right at the edge of view range.

Finally got a chance to sit down and play today. I finally settled on like the third seed I had generated a week ago, and after probably 50 more attempts, nothing has come close. After spending some significant time in the world, I'm wondering what the hell I was looking for because this is, without question, the best looking Minecraft generated terrain I've seen.

I tried to record a whole day/night cycle time lapse. I sat there for 33 straight minutes watching an unmoving screen, all night into all day. Unfortunately all recording software suddenly decided to stop working on me and the recording failed. I'll get it working tomorrow. I am totally I'm love with this world already. I'm seeing all kinds of potential.

Anyone have any advice on recording software? I used to use PlaysTV because it was barely noticeable on frame rate, but it just stopped working. I didn't like it anyway, So I went to try ReLive which comes with the software for my graphics card. Only, apparently, instead of this gorgeous time lapse, it recorded 33 minutes of my desktop background. I can't get it to record in full screen at all, and I can't have that bar up there.

Cross posted from my LP in the showcase, but since it applies here, why not?

Recorded this this morning. It's a time lapse of a day cycle. Recommend full screen and wait for the sun rise for best effect.
