GPU drops & CPU spikes

  • Tech Support section is for getting help with FTB related problems. If there's a repeatable issue that can be labeled as a bug, then please use the issue tracker for the pack or the app at GitHub issue trackers - If there's no repository for a pack that means that the pack is old and/or will not be updated. Bugs for older packs will not be fixed, unless they are critical.

Title GPU drops & CPU spikes

Launcher Type FTB Launcher

Modpack Inventions

Modpack version 1.0.2

Have you modified the pack? No

Link to log file

Details of the issue I'm running my own FTB Inventions server for just me & a couple friends (the server is on a separate PC, (that's all it does). Everything was running fine until recently I started having what seems like lag spikes. While playing on one monitor, I have MSI Afterburner on my second monitor and I was noticing my GPUs frequency on both the core clock and memory were dropping down to idle speeds, 135 & 324 MHz respectively, about every 4-5 seconds then jump back up to their normal load values, 1492 & 3703 MHz respectively. I then started noticing my CPU was going from around 28% to 90% whenever the lag spikes happen and the GPU clocks dropped. I updated Java and any drivers that needed it, but the problem persists. To see if this was PC related, I loaded it up on my 2nd PC and was getting the same results. I even tried turning down graphics settings and even updated the pack from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2. PC specs (All running Windows 10) - Server: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @3.0GHz, 8 GB RAM, GTX 550ti, 160 GB HDD | Main PC: Intel i7-4770 @ 3.9GHz, 16 GB RAM, MSI Gaming 4G GTX 970 OC'd, 250 GB SSD, 2 TB HDD | 2nd PC: AMD FX-8350 @ 4.2 GHz, 8 GB RAM, GTX 760, 128 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD. My friend that's regularly on the server just started having this issue today, but mentioned he had it a few weeks ago in single player. This is causing the game to become unplayable. I've had the server going for just over a month now, with proper shutdowns whenever needed (ie: Windows updates).

I also tried seeing if this was happening in other games including vanilla minecraft, but it is not, just this mod pack. I've been noticing that this happens more frequently when I make trips to the Nether. I added some pics of what Afterburner is showing. 1st pic is from main PC, showing clock speed history in Inventions and then in The Long Dark. Other 2 pics from 2nd PC.

E: Ooo, should try upping the RAM to 4gigs first.

I know playing without minimap can be relatively horrible, but could you try removing Journeymap temporarily (note that this will get rid of your waypoints possibly) and seeing if the stuttering still happens?

Worth a try. Would I be doing that on the server side or client? Also, how do I do that as I've never changed a mod pack before.

Try client side only first. When you're choosing a modpack to launch, there's a button near the top that says "Edit modpack". Just go there, find Journeymap and click "Disable"

E: I'm not sure if Journeymap nowadays requires both client and serverside, and if it does, disable it temporarily from server too. Remember to take backups of important waypoints

Sorry for the long delay, been working a lot. Disabling Journeymap did not help. I did increase RAM to 3.5GB and now it seems to have stopped my issue. I do, however, still get GPU drops/CPU spikes every so often, but nothing like before.
