57 the GUI's from linux also work very nice and if not you just install another one, only a shame that it didn't look for compatibility with the drivers that I wanted to install.
Luckily the open source drivers seem to kick way more ass since I last used them. Although my laptop is now sitting at around 50 degrees when idle but meh could have been worse

58 Yeah, I can't complain about Linux's GUIs or anything else, for that matter. I'm currently kind of used to Unity, after having used it intermittently for a few years.

57 I now use mate but I am probably going to change to awesome or something in the near future but first I want to know why my C drive from my desktop only wants to be shrunk for a maximum of 673 MB.

58 You have weird computer problems...

Although I can't say I've never run into anything similar to that in the past. For some reason, the "recommended" way to install OSes on Raspberry Pis makes it so that you can never upgrade your SD card (which it uses as a hard drive) to a larger one and get anything out of it.

They even have instructions for half a dozen different ways to upgrade your SD card, but they don't work. If you start out with a 2GB card, you'll only ever be able to use 2GB unless you backup your files, format it, and reinstall the OS from scratch.

57 if it uses the SD card as a hard drive whats so strange about it?

as for having weird computer problems, I cannot deny that. Did I already mention that I broke windows xp one day by doing a virus scan?

58 *buys 2GB boot card with several OSes pre-loaded*
*boots up Pi, does stuff*
*buys a 32GB SD card*
*copies the contents of the old card onto the new one via dd, as per the instructions on the website*
*wonders why some of the steps don't work*
*skips over the nonfunctional steps*
*boots up Pi with 32GB card*
*types sudo apt-get upgrade*
*gets spammed with someRandomPackage could not be upgraded: Out of disk space*

57 maybe you should read the errors from your 5th line and fix those before you continue with the rest of the steps

58 It didn't say much other than "You can't do that". I think that the problem is the installer that they use- it formats the card in some weird way that the recommended software for reformatting it doesn't understand.

If you just install Raspbian or whatever directly on the card, though, it works fine. If course, doing so deletes all your files, so that's why USB thumb drives are handy.

But they tell you it's possible to upgrade your SD card without reinstalling the OS OR deleting all your files. And it works just fine... if you install the OS the no-longer-recommended way in the first place.

They made this installer software that you put on the SD card directly, then you can boot it up straight away and load one of a number of different OSes. Which certainly does simplify things at first, but breaks all the tutorials they had previously made about how to upgrade your card.

57 >_>
that reminds me of installing steam on ubuntu
step 1 get the open source drivers
step 2 apt-get install steam or whatever method you prefer
step 3 run steam
step 4 close steam
step 5 switch back to the drivers you prefer
step 6 run steam and pray that nothing breaks

57 ... why would they make an os based on linux if they don't even have a steam for it...
