the Hurd, on the other hand, are both entirely their own things.
The hurd is supposed to be a unix-compatible kernel though :) (which uses unix replacing daemons and I really wish they would just drop the a in that word, would make it a lot more fun :p )

But under the hood, the Hurd operates under an entirely different system than the UNIX and Linux kernels do. So I guess it'd be... what, a close friend to the UNIX family?
