77 Barry's Land was a land card conceived of a long time ago that was basically just a colorless basic land. I think the original intent was to turn Domain up to six (which would require the land to have its own subtype), but more recently Commander players have latched onto the idea so they can use their colorless commanders (Karn, Kozilek, etc.) without having to track down 40-odd different nonbasic lands.
Wastes doesn't appear to have any subtype at all. Commander players rejoice; Domain fans... not so much.
Oh, and why was it called Barry's Land? The guy who came up with (or just popularized?) it was named Barry. He was some former designer type; I don't remember his exact significance.
