A list of things mod developers will need to change and some of my personal favorite things. Full list of changes here - https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/1.13
  • The Flattening changes a bunch of block states and values - https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/1.13/Flattening
  • The World Generation algorithm has been redone.
  • The entire command system has been completely overhauled - https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Commands
  • Data packs replace hard-coded values- Loot Tables, Recipes, etc. - https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Data_pack
  • Water has been reworked. Its no longer a block, water and lava flowing blocks have been removed. Waterlogged is a tag which states whether the block has water in it or not. Items float to the surface.
  • The block ID limit is gone.
  • Some blocks collision box now match their bounding box. cough Hoppers cough
  • Ooh, chests can be placed right next to each other.
  • Undead mobs now sink
So basically the entire game's code has been picked up, throw into a trash can, and then redone. :p
Nice

This needs to be expanded upon. I need to know how this works. People have been using water as a conveyor belt in minecraft since at least 2000 BC when it was first discovered by the indigenous people iof Minecraftlandia.

That still works. But now items float upwards so we can make cool lava lamps using water, colored glass, and a colorful block.

Also, water conveyor belts are faster as a result without the need of ice.
Some blocks can now share their space with full water blocks. (basically everything that isn't a full block)
As a result, you can still block flowing water with pressure plates, signs, etc, etc. However you can also place a water source block inside of them.

using magma blocks you can make a downwards drift, meaning that everything that is above it will be sucked down. Soul sand has the opposite effect. This means that you can now rather easily make item elevators. Technically you don't need the soulsand, as items will go up anyway but soulsand makes this process faster.

In previous snapshots it was possible to push blocks that had water inside them while they contained the water. This resulted in you able to push water with pistons. I'm not sure if this is still possible.

I'd be happy for anything to improve performance. The new json block format with resource packs is horrendous on performance, takes so long to load a modpack nowadays.

The new Water Mechanics will be fun to play with Modded I think, though it may be a while before we get enough mods to really play in that sand box.

MumboJumbo does a few really good YouTube spotlights on 1.13 water mechanics where he shows item movement and whatnot.
