Hi, this has probably been asked before, but im not going to bother sifting thru a bunch of posts to find my answer.

My issue is, i dont particularly care to download the twitch app, or curse, i dont like either of them and i dont want either of them on my laptop, which is running low on space, so not installing them would be great. But i do however want to play FTB. Is there a way to install the most recent FTB without installing a program i dont want? Dont i have to use forge or something??? i really dont want to have to install something to play a mod for a game.
Thanks.

The only way to install our packs is using either the Twitch launcher or the FTB launcher, both of which are linked on the home page. There is no zip provided that you can download and install. If you want to play any of our packs you will need a launcher.

How much does Twitch app use disk and how much will every pack and avery save you create?

The packs are pretty tiny. Just like Vanilla, it's the size of the world that's a killer.

The only trouble with Twitch is that it wants to support more than Minecraft, which makes it bloated, but on the other hand, it's got almost all the mods available to add to your pack and built in support for making custom ones. Of course it also gives access to non FTB packs as well.

The big packs still come out on the Legacy Launcher which is pretty small. That said, being legacy means eventually it'll no longer be supported, but for now it works fine.

Once you have a feel for what you want and what you are doing, it is not that hard to build a custom pack on your vanilla Minecraft launcher. That said, it is still at least 50x easier to use the Twitch/Curse launcher. Seriously.

Kind of going along with this topic, what is the difference between running things through FTB and downloading all of the mods in a particular modpack and just running a server with those?

If you need context, I am looking to play Skyfactory 3 over LAN. So far everyone says that the FTB launder is needed, but no one has explained what it does or why I need it.

Who? That statement does not make any sense.

but no one has explained what it does or why I need it.
Maybe they just hate Curse/Twitch app and can not explain their theory.

All server files for FTB packs should be available in https://www.feed-the-beast.com/modpacks E.g. SF3: https://www.feed-the-beast.com/projects/ftb-presents-skyfactory-3 has server files in rigth bottom corner or https://www.feed-the-beast.com/projects/ftb-presents-skyfactory-3/files every version has "+1 server pack" link for server files.

Note: unstable have no server files because intended target audience of the pack.

By "everyone" I meant all of the "How to set up a Skyfactory 3 server" tutorials I have read.

Basically, what is the difference between running Skyfactory through the FTB server vs just launching Minecraft with all of the mods installed and opening up my world to LAN (keeping in mind that this will only ever be LAN. I have no intention of sharing this world anywhere outside my home).

What extra service do the server files provide?

I think they are thinking about the config files that change recipes and drop rates etc

If you can collect all the mods (correct versions) and the config files, you should be fine.

I too am not fond of the twitch launcher, but it works quite well for all your modded MC needs. If you really want, you can get the twitch app, download the mod pack you want, then bring it over to multiMC and use that to launch. Only time you would need to launch the twitch app would be when you wanted to update, unless you do some computer trickery :)

If you go to the FTB site and download the SkyFactory 3 zip file, it has all of the mods in it already. No need to go around collecting them.

Also, why would I need multiMC? Why not just launch Minecraft with Forge, open to LAN, and play? Still not getting an answer to my question.

Because they all you to easily manage various mod pack installations, as well as letting you go back to a plain vanilla Minecraft experience. Otherwise you have to manually add/remove all those things whenever you go from say Sky Factory 3 to Direwolf20 or whatever other pack you want to play.

The main reason for running a server is to offload the tracking everything and the world generation and some other functions to a different core on your CPU. For example, if you load your client and do open to lan and have a friend join, a single core in your CPU is used to track you, your friend, all of the mob and item movement, all of the mod checks, terrain generation & in addition draw everything on the screen for you and accept your mouse and keyboard inputs. For most computers this can be a little much for one core to handle. By offloading the server you can use another PC for the server or at least run it on another core inside of your PC and break up the all of the tasks.

Another reason for a server, if you can have a dedicated one that you join from another computer, is to have a persistent world. It keeps merrily chugging away even when you aren't actively playing as long as it's chunkloaded.
