Pardon my ignorance, but is it possible to limit the FPS in Minecraft? Someone suggested it, and I was wondering if I could.

Ideally, if I could, I'd want FPS locked at 20 or 30 (VSync OFF) for my tiny little Celeron 887 processor.

Using the "power saver" option in the video settings locks it to 40 maximum.

If you use Optifine, you can actually set the desired FPS directly instead, though I believe it doesn't go below 30 maximum either.

Have you tried without Optifine? If you are playing the 1.5 packs you really don't need Optifine to speed up your frames. How much RAM is allocated to FTB? I recommend anything from 1GB to 3GB if you have 8GB of RAM.

Your CPU and video card both will be struggling. Minecraft runs on OpenGL and not DirectX; Intel's integrated GPUs are really bad at OpenGL. Also, with many mods, Minecraft devours CPU power, and yours clocks very low. You probably won't see much of an improvement unless you buy a new computer.

There are a few advanced tricks you could try, but those depend on how confident you are with your computer skills. They're not recommended for newcomers.

Are you using Advanced OpenGL or VSync? What are your in game video settings?

fast graphics
smooth lighting off
brightness 50%
Fog off
details all fast
particles minimum
render distance tiny
max fps
advanced opengl off
chunk loading smooth
preformance: everything off

Yeah even the cheapest desktop options with a dedicated GPU will be leaps and bounds better than most laptop options.

Disabling Optifine doubled my FPS. Connected textures are really than intense aren't they...

Additional mods: OptiFine_1.5.2_HD_D5, [1.5.2]ReiMinimap_v3.3_06

Render distance: Far
Performance: 21 FPS (limited)
chunk loading: Off (avoid) same go for Open GL wich actualy make my FPS 50% lover
Fog: On
Fog Distance: 0.8
Clouds:Fast
Cloud height: off
connected textures: Fancy
Texture pack: 1.5.2 faithful 2.9.5

Specifications:
Old Champ..
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit SP2
Java 64 bit
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (1 core)
Radeon X1950pro 256Mb
Memory 2x2Gb DDR2 ( 2,25 for FTB)

I have implemented
-XX:UseSSE=3
-XX:+AggressiveOpts
-XX:MaxPermSize=128m
im not sure if that make difrance for me but if its not hurting my performance i hope its helping.

FPS: 15-20 in base . Chunks loading bring it way down rerly to 10 but it keep up att 15 even wen moving high speed. Outh of base whit chunk loaded i have 30-40.

Frst i started whit Normal 32 distance whit 25-30 FPS but eventualy in my base lover FPS to 15-20.
My seting we difrent, usual, reduced render distance a bit, turned off clouds and fog but then i nothice a strenge thing.
Even whit a tiny render distance my FPS wont go up (becouse all of 40 animals i got in my base, probably..) so i changet my render distance way up to Far and my fps stay same ...
So my conclusion is that you can not incrise FPS so easy.
My HDD (FTB Unleashed) is defragmented whit UltimatDefrag, it wont bost FPS but i gess it help whit loding new chunks and help whit stabilisation of FPS.
My memory dont help to incrise FPS directly but what it do is making my render distance mach larger easy and in same time incrise speed of chunk loding and whit larger render distance it actualy help your FPS stabilisation becouse it reduce need of constant chunk loding.
So even 15-20 FPS sims low its actualy realy nice and smooth. My FPS only get choppy wen using NEI and i open close inventory a loot. But whit use of Forestry Crafting Table (Worktable) i avoid lagg.
I hope people now beter understand that having 20 FPS is not soo scary if you have learned how to keep them smooth.
Well thos are my observations i hope they make sence considering my bad Eanglish.

As to optimizing performance, check this thread out for JVM arguments: http://forum.feed-the-beast.com/threads/jvm-arguments-for-modded-minecraft-updated-9-22-13.28994/

Personally I haven't had a lot of luck with Optifine. But the JVM thread has made a world of difference.

I may be going against the grain but i am a firm believer in upgrading your equipment for improved performance in pretty much any game. If minecraft doesn't run smoothly out of the box (using 64 bit java and 4gigs dedicated) then you're pretty much out of luck. If you already have a decent setup you can try overlocking. Also texture packs often have a huge impact on performance (I am assuming you have disabled them already though).
