My computer has 4GB of RAM installed along with 64-bit Java. I launch FTB with 3.75GB of RAM and when I check Resource Manager, I still have 1.2GB of RAM unallocated, yet FTB is still very laggy. (25 FPS max)
Any solutions?

Memory is not the only solution to counter lag. The bottleneck in your pc might be something else.

Anyhow, when you allocate x amount of memory it will handle that number as the maximum memory in use I believe. So when it doesnt need 3,75GB of RAM it won't use it.

Ok but I don't understand why FTB is still lagging when there are more resources to use. Any tips to help reduce lag?

It may be that your other hardware can't keep up and if that is the case more ram would not help. Try to lower the settings and check your other hardware.

Dont allocate that much ram to the game. Specially not with only 4GB ram to start with. If you force your game to allocate almost all your RAM, your OS and everything else on your computer is getting starved, leading to something having to be run off your harddrive instead, causing a massive bottleneck.

Also, you cannot force the game to use the memory. How much memory it uses is purely dependent on how much it needs to keep loaded(textures usually the biggest post). RAM is not like processing power. RAM is like having a larger space in a workshop so you can do more work at the same time. But its the CPU and GPU that are the actual workers that set the pace of the work. By setting aside your entire workshop for a certain job which don't need it, you are in essence forced to send other vital work out to subcontractors, which takes longer.

Allocate max 2GB to the game, and try the JVM arguments as mentioned by un worry.

Actually, more RAM wont let you do more work at the same time. Its just more space to have ongoing work easily accessible, so you wont have to go to the storage (HDD) and waste time searching for the things you need.
Nothing really wrong with your explanation, but i don`t like misunderstandings on "good to know"-stuff like this :)

hehe yeah ok, RAM is your work floor, and HDD is your store room. And setting aside all your work floor for a job that dont need it, forces you to use the store room for work, which its not designed for(slowing down work since its so far from the machines) :p
And well, more RAM does actually allow you to have space for multiple production lines with larger items. It creates the possibility for more items being worked on at the same time, but you do indeed need to have available workers to do the work.
