I have noticed that in several youtube videos of people playing monster there tooltips show growth percentages and very detailed info about the machines they mouse over but mine has only the name of the item and what mod its from... Does anyone know how to fix this so I get the "advanced" tooltips?

You probably want to update the mod WAILA ("what am I looking at"), which provides these tooltips. It started out as just telling you the name of the block your cursor is pointing at (hence the name of the mod) but in later versions it expanded into something much more.
There's also an add-on (i think) for it that will tell you if your currently equipped tool can break the block you are currently looking at.
It's in Magic Farm 2 and a couple of other packs, can't remember for the life of me what it's called though.
