Have you even tried that? Looking at the settings, it looks a bit better in terms of available ressources (sand!) but every seed I tried spawned me at the bottom of the sea. Kind of "expected" since the game puts you on top of the highest solid block :p But even on peaceful, you drown before reaching the sealevel. It also seems that while villages are spawning, but on the ocean floor (with airholes above the roofs), making them and especially their farms exceptionally hard to use. And let's not even go into travelling to other villages. Although, with boats, it might even be faster than normal flatland.
But really, without a seed that spawns you *inside* a village, this is not challenging but impossible. If you would get a survivable spawn however, it would probably be easier than normal flatland :)

just plain

just plain hard to do becouse when they start entering the houses is too late... gonna try that now and let you know..

Wait for night they all go inside then.

Then build an airlock sort of thing so DOOR -DIRT - AIR - DIRT sort of box thing dig in and replace the block behind you. before digging the dirt in front and going in to trade. Works like a champ. I've kept villages alive this way while building them a wall for defense. Just remember if your going to build them a wall give it a lip to keep spiders out.

Spawn is totally survivable. Dig down till you have dirt above your head, then dig forward and you have an air pocket. If you place a piece of sand above your head half way, you won't die.

Is there a limitation for using the nether? You can find obsidian in blacksmith chests unless the mods got rid of it as a possible item, and also through building it with the lava from the blacksmith building itself... access to that would open up a lot of possibilities in what you could build and do. Even get to a point of generating a decent amount of power through geothermals like everyone else does anyway.

I tried playing like this in vanilla once, but I didn't like the limit I had on materials like redstone, but since mods allow us access to just about anything through some machine I think I might try this. Though I might customize my flat world a bit for preference.

You can find some copper and tin in the blacksmith chests, so traveling can help. And if you can get a centrifuge along with enough lava through travel or the nether you could get it that way too. Thaumcraft is only an issue because you have to obtain a shard for a wand. I assume you could get it from the thaumcraft village building so again it is just traveling.

Its actually even more of an issue because of research. With a lack of easy to find paper and a limited number of things to feed into the table also the lack of Thaum trees. All this will make research fairly troublesome. Not imposable just vary vary hard. You pretty much are forced to travel and raid villages for stuff even random things from chests will help out insanely with the research part of Thaumcraft.

Well, I assume once you have a pulverizer you can just make wood chips from wood to get the paper. But you have to get sand, which I guess requires a macerator if you don't have EE3, which requires diamonds. Long process just to get some 'basic' machines. I guess since I play with the mods from both packs I have it easy because I can farm for a few nights for a minium stone which helps greatly. With it I have access to ender pearls to iron and paper to reeds among other really useful things. Just needs a small investment of iron and gold to create it. I haven't explored much of my world, but are there no thaumcraft trees at all? If not, that could prove a problem to create some of the advanced items.

since powering the Recycler from traded Redstone has proven somewhat slow.

Note you can grow redstone with IC2 crops.

Could normally grow iron and gold as well, but these need ore blocks to mature. Which would be impossible on a flat map.

And neither glass or sand can be obtained from any loot chests (blacksmith, TC tower) or trading

Glass used to be a villager sale option. Did they change it?

Nice to see some more people trying this challenge. I think when you comment on ideas and tactics, it could be helpful to add which pack you're playing with as well as any extra mods you added. DW has the Minium Stone to transmute, which isn't available in the MC pack. On the other hand, I don't think DW has Gregtech, which rules out the Industrial Centrifuge & Electrolyzer for materials. IC2 Crops might be a good idea. You can get Iron from the Iron Golems and Gold from Blacksmith chests, so you "only" need to breed the crops in the first place. Okay, j ust realized that you need Ore Blocks, so you actually can't do crops for Iron and Gold.
With regards to the Nether, I think it should be fair game, it's not like it provides instant access to all normal ressources like a Mystcraft age or the Twilight Forest would.

Glass used to be a villager sale option. Did they change it?

I haven't seen it so far and the Minecraft Wiki doesn't list it as an option. Haven't had any luck getting it from scrap boxes either. Finding the diamonds for a Macerator might really be the only option.

Wow, I'm so frickin blind... I must've looked at the chart a million times and haven't realized glass was on there. Thanks for pointing it out :)
