So basically, I have an laptop which I don't use anymore, I want to play Feed The Beast Monster with one of my friend but I want to know if the specifications of my old laptop will be good enough to run it. My server will only have 2 players on it (Me and my friend), here are my specs -

4GB RAM
500GB Storage (Only used around 200GB)
Intel HD Graphics 4000 (That wont matter anyway because im only hosting a server)
Intel Pentium Processor B960 (2.10 GHZ)

My server wont be 24/7, it will just be on when my friend and me want to play.
I already know how to port forward, I just want to know if the specs are good enough to RUN the server!

Thanks for reading ;)

All you can do is set up the server and see. The only problem I see is the processor speed is quite low so you may have machine lag.

It should be fine. I used to run a server with a old computer that had 4gb of ram and a core 2 duo and it the server didn't start lagging until about 8 people were on.

The cpu worries me, But I think if you install CentOS on your computer it will probably run fine.

Yeah but then you have the headache of linux lmao. I have a linux partition and a windows partition on my server and honestly I can't see the difference with a single person (Myself) playing. On linux my chunks load faster for some reason and on windows my TPS is higher and I have a somewhat more stable connection.

If its a laptop that is just being used for the server then you can just factory reset it and run the server on a clean windows installation. With only two people playing on the server and with it not being a server running 24/7 I think the CPU will just cut it. If you cut out mystcraft and cross-dimension pumping of liquids, Quarries, and you use the ender pump/quarry that replaces the blocks with rock so that it doesn't do block updates then that will make things a lot more CPU friendly.

This is all assuming you are CPU bound which may not be a problem.

Its still a Haswell processor which means the performance will be fine, more than enough for 2 people.

Was your old computer a laptop? Laptops, despite having comparable CPU clock speed, generally do not have the same chipset speed as a desktop, to extend battery life. While the CPU may be operating at nearly the same speed (most mobile CPUs have a "downshift" mode for power saving as well) the rest of the system is operating slower than a desktop.

Doesn't matter if its a laptop or desktop in this case. Any processor made in the last few years paired with 4 gigs of memory and a modern storage device is enough for a small to medium modded server,
