Silktouch coal ore and throw 4 of them in the industrial grinder to get 4 tiny piles of thorium dusts.
Well that's just EPIC! You still get the coal, so its basically free thorium :)

Now I just need to get an industrial grinder...

If you have enable MFFS mod, you also get thorium dust from monazit ore, so that's another good source of thorium.

You don't need an industrial grinder, even - if you go into the TE config and allow overloading of pulverizer recipes, GregTech will modify five different vanilla ores to generate extra output in the pulverizer. Coal ore is among them, and it gives a 10% chance for thorium dust. It's not quite as good as the grinder (1 in 10 instead of 1 in 4), but it's a good start since the pulverizer is usually one of the machines everyone builds very early on.

Ofc.. but I don't think you have silktouch pickaxe/rockcutter that early as well (unless you use that angular saw thingie from factorization).

Depends on how lucky you get from enchanting ;)

I usually hit level 30 by the time I find the first diamonds, at which point I plop down an enchantment table and enchant a diamond pick (if I have the leather for the books, that is). And since I play with hard mode recipes for TE, that means I usually have my first lvl 30 enchanted tool before I even build a pulverizer. I have not yet gotten a silk touch pick out of that first enchant... but then again I've only started two worlds in the past three months. I'm sure some others will get it on the first try :p

Besides, as you stated there are alternatives.

Yeah.. I haven't got any silktouch in my new world :(, that's after like 8-10 times of hitting lvl 30. Strange though, I usually got one after like 3-4 times..and just recently I gave up and use my efficiency 3 book in my rock cutter :p, doesn't look like cheating, the tool is not glowing after the enchant haha.

But for early-mid game I'd rather use the factorizaton grinder for coals (you know, for steel <.<)..
