I'd have to disagree with using paper, unless you planning on keeping the pickaxe to lategame. I only really modify my late game tools, aside from maybe giving moss to my early tools. I don't really gain much from having the extra modifier. The binding also doesn't affect durability at all.

My personal favourite pre-metal pick is a flint head, stone binding, wood handle pickaxe, flint isn't too hard to come by, and i usually get a fair bit simply gathering gravel for grout. By the time I'm actually running low on flint to repair, I've usually got my smeltery up, and access to metal tools.

Food is often my biggest issue early game, I also tend to opt for more magical mods first, and go for tech later on. (the only early tech I often get is ore doubling.) As such I usually get myself a fairly early Soujourner's sash to aid me in getting about, and an Agricarnation once I got a decent mana supply.
Also, if you can use Barley instead of wheat, it does grow faster than wheat. That said I tend to use wheat anyway as Wheat is needed for the rune of spring, and there isn't a huge differnece.

for me that extra modifier on my pick actually helps alot, seeing as I always put a flux modifier, lapis, diamond and redstone modifier on it.
with flux I'd no longer need to repair my pick and the lapis gives me fortune (one lapis is already enough) the diamond will allow me to mine higher tiered ores and the redstone gives it that extra bit of speed since stone isn't exactly a fast tool to mine.

and I actually save my flint for something else, the sag mill. after I've used the grinder and moved onto the smeltery, I only use enough resources to be able to build a generator from Ender IO, a sag mill and an alloy smelter.
if you use flint in a sag mill you've an increased chance of getting more resources from your ores and use less power (flint will will increase the main output to 120%, the bonus output to 125% and decrease power usage by 15%.)
I could also use TE machines and have the increased output, but it'll require a whole lot more resources to get it to that point, plus it's very easy to upgrade Ender IO machines and you can also easily upgrade the generator.

so I prefer using Ender IO machines for resource processing as flint is quite easy to create (though it's very precious for me)
if you've one igneous extruder going into a sag mill it'll produce sand with gravel as a byproduct. the sand can be send to another sag mill who'll create silicon, which can be used for Ender IO and Applied Energistics 2 recipes.
the gravel that's a byproduct can be send to another sag mill who'll process it into flint. with this I have it set so all the flint that's being created is send to all these sag mills to increase production aswell, and you'll produce the resources alot faster.

If you start working on AE2 early. Alot of people also don't know you can use the wooden crack on the Charger from ae2, whice is very usefull. It just takes a lot of cranking...
Lol
I read that for the first time
But you still need to find charged certus quartz ore to get started right? Since the charger requires fluix crystals.

Yeah. That stays the same. you need 1 charged certus to start, till now its like that

edit: Its just for power

Hm I guess it would be easier to make the vibration chamber or some other power source rather than cranking.

Well i never recommand building the Vibration chamber. Not early game atleast
It takes the energy accepter to make. You can also make any type of generator and plug it in to an energy accepter, Its in my opinion way more usefull for expanding.

About its easier to hook up energy, Yes thats true. But that costs energy. And i don't like wasting that early game :)

To each his own here I think. I honestly don't keep the flint pickaxe that long. Often only enough time to find enough stuff to make a metal pickaxe. It's also fair enough if you keeping the stone pickaxe for a long time.

It definitely is viable to make a TiCo hammer with stone head and better materials for all the other parts (e.g. bronze plates, blue slime handle). Then it is reasonably fast and durable but still can be repaired with stone. The mining level doesn't matter that much on a hammer.
