I used to be able to place a torch while holding a Hammer for example, if the torch was in the slot next to the tool. Now I can't... Any ideas? Was this functionality removed for the latest version of TiCon?

That feature was removed. You can put the torches in your other hand (F is the default key) so TiCon's author removed it.

Ah, my unfamiliarity with 1.10.2 has been revealed. Didn't even know I could use my other hand! Thanks for the tip, and the notice.
This is a reason I keep tabs on Vanilla development... Off-hand usage was introduced in 1.9, the "Combat" mechanic upgrade, along with shields.

Yes, there is an upgrade you can make to put into your drill. You have to set it to a hotbar number slot, then put something in that hotbar slot for it to work.
