I completely misunderstood the purpose of this thread. I play GT packs these days, and as you may know, GT takes a long time to startup.

So...I have a "startup routine."

Its really simple. I try to see if I can play (and win!) and entire game of Hearts before Minecraft is ready to go. (I rarely accomplish this.)

I mine as many blocks straight down as I can while standing on the side of the shaft. The I line it with ladders as I climb down (if it is safe). I then dig in a small alcove that lines up with what is going to become the tunnel for that specific Y-level. I then step into this alcove and then dig straight down as far as I can again. Repeat that until I reach bedrock.
I just stand between two blocks and mine them down making sure there is something to stand on. Put down water under one of them for fast way down and climb the other up placing ladders on the way up.

Depending on the mods in the pack, obviously.

I run the world looking for a place to live, gathering loot along the way.
Tinkers' smeltery for early ore doubling.
Food Farm.
Super early Botania setup aka daybloom mana farm.
Mining, mining, mining, Achievement Get DIAMONDS!!!
Ender IO or TE for starting tech, preferably Ender IO.
After that is whatever I feel like doing.
This. I rush Botania for the Sojourner's Sash and Magnet Ring.

Other than that, I've been rushing into a 3x3x4 Big Reactor from the smeltery.

I'm working on a GT pack right now, I think I'd have gone absolutely nuts if I didn't have Fastcraft installed. Usually I hit start in MMC and then wander outside to have a smoke, and get my recording environment set up. By the time I'm done, it's (usually) ready to go.

Generally, my start routine depends on what I'm doing. I do YT videos, so I try and vary it up a little bit depending on what I've done in previous series. Right now I'm pretty into the masochistic world of Greg, so I've been focusing a lot on Thaumcraft and Rotarycraft. Right now, my preferred sequence goes:

1. House
2. Mining Caves
3. Blast Furnace
4. Mine until I can build Rotarycraft Steam Engines
5. Rotarycraft Grinder and friction heater

Then I sit back and enjoy 3x ore multiplication.

These days I scout a bit before committing to an area. That determines my start routine. Generally though it's,

Punch wood, make crafting table make wood pick sword and hoe for the achievements. Punch grass until I have 4 or 5 wheat and hopefully I luck out and get a potato, sweet potato or essence seed.
Mine cobble to make a furnace then decide where I'm building. Inside a cliff face? I punch enough wood to make a door, then get a farm area figured out near the entrance. I hollow out the cliff in a 4x4 pop a door on and head back out to see if there is any easy coal to snag. If there is I bust out 4 stone torches and get those inside the starter base. After that I'm looking for easy mining sources like a crevice, cave or cliff face. I shoot for 3 iron (pick), 3 tin ( for a bucket ) and three certus for the grindstone. I'm also scoping for 3 unlucky sheep.

My first day I like to have a double chest sunk in the ground, two crafting slabs over the top of it and 2 furnaces behind them. A grindstone next to it and a bed somewhere if the stars aligned. That's my starter base. I can access the chest through the crafting stations and I like two crafting stations because it seems I always need to make something while I'm in the process of making something. I'm forgetful like that :D

After the first day the 2nd is spent getting the farm going and hopefully starting to make the decent in a mine shaft.

I've only just started playing minecraft again after a long break, so my startup routine is limited by the mods I know. When I started my first server after the break, I went for tinkers construct because it was familiar to me and not too complicated to get into. After that I went to thermal expansion and mfr because they hadn't changed dramatically. Enderio wasn't too hard to get familiarized with either, and big reactors was the only power source I needed. Now my startup routine is:

Find a decent area where I can cut into some stone and live in a cave for a while. Punch plenty of wood, in case I can't find coal, and for tools. Usually lock myself in the cave and try to mine some during the first night. Hopefully find some iron and build a refinery (practicalities). Come up sometime during the day and try to find some food and sheep for wool, maybe try to find some clay/sand/gravel for smeltery. Mine some more, build a nice little farm of some sort, gather enough resources for a 3x3 big reactor, start with mekanism machines, usually mine fairly heavily around this point, and expand my farm.

After giving this some more thought, I realized how much I prioritize a mining turtle and, since my Resurrection play, the OpenBlocks hang glider in a new start. The new TiCo armor set makes a pretty good base set until I'm on my feet, as well.

Today I broke with tradition. Normally I branch mine for quite a while until I have the mineral wealth to build a quarry and the power/transport infrastructure to make it work quickly.

And normally I place them just below the surface because it looks tidier.

This time, I decided I want my base to be just above bedrock (since infinity has that nifty setting that removes void fog) AND open to sunlight via the miracle of clear glass.

I got impatient, so I plonked my quarry down on the surface with 8 survivalist generators, a chest, a trashcan and an itemduct.

Step 1: Find exposed stone.
Step 2: Play Creeper Tag.
Step 3: Skip wooden tools.

After the first three, I get nine more cobble for a pair of furnaces. (Tinker's Slabs) Then it's a rush to the Smeltery. After that I get a pulverizer. Then I don't worry about things.
=.= I'd prefer Tinkers flint tools or Biomes o Plenty MUD tools to skip wood tools, much easier.

I usually rush into a 3x3x3 Big Reactor from 2 quartz grindstones after a bit of caving in the FIRST day.

My start:

0. Set difficulty to peaceful
1. Find nice location to build starter base.
2. Punch tree, get wood, build crafting table and wood pickaxe
3. Mine stone and coal, build furnace and stone pickaxe(s) (if AE is available build grindstone)
4. Mine 3 iron, (grind it), smelt iron into ingots and make iron pickaxe
5. Mine for Project Red gems and diamonds, make gem pickaxe then mine for a few resources.
6. Use mined resources to make a milling machine (macerater, pulverizer, SAG Mill), a powered furnace, and a basic power source for them.

Beyond that it depends on my mood and the mods I have installed.

Well, my starting routine honestly sucks...

1) Walk around for a little bit
2) Find a place to call home, dig 3 blocks underground and hide while I go grab a drink irl
3) Aimlessly mine while listening to bon jovi (I always manually mine to bon jovi)
4) Think about making machines, but build instead.
5) Realize I have a beautiful, empty house & cry because I'm broke and can't fill it.
6) Quit because I don't feel like mining.

I warned you...

That's what server play is for: build awesome mansions while your slaves friends go mining for you. ;)
This extends to building machines/production lines as well. When they get rebellious, just bribe them with jetpacks.
Just make sure that when they ask you for weapons to rebel against you with, don't provide them with crap.
Except maybe potato jetpacks. :p

[old] ... How do you do strikethroughs on this forum?
EDIT: I feel like @malicious_bloke is really good at making topics that last. :p

Ritual?
Check to make sure the options aren't on "kill my RAM" mode.

Honestly, I build a hobbit hole, rush a smeltery, pulveriser and power, becore starting on later game.

Agreed, everyone knows how you start minecraft, I want to know how you start minecraft...

1. Set kettle to boil
2. Open CreeperPanel, restart operating system on the server, start booting up the server, read the chat and tell people they're idiots.
3. Open FTB forums, catch up on alerts.
4. Fire up launcher and start the game.
5. Scan new threads and tell people they're idiots.
6. Play
7. Google search
8. Remember an hour in that the kettle was boiled and I still haven't had coffee

Just out of curiosity, having never played a pack with GT yet: what exactly does "a long time" mean?

I believe this sums it up I might have forgotten some things though

calculating the uu matter costs
making screws for all the metals
making plates for all the metals
making something else for all the metals
