I believe this sums it up I might have forgotten some things though

calculating the uu matter costs
making screws for all the metals
making plates for all the metals
making something else for all the metals
Not what I meant. I meant how long does starting up a pack with GT actually take on a reasonably powerful machine? Three minutes? Five? Ten?

My admittedly substandard computer would take close to 15 minutes to load up the Resurrection pack when we were playing that. It usually had a point in the load that told you outright that if you thought it was frozen, you should wait longer. Then it told you thanks for waiting - have some cake.

I would usually launch it when I got home from work, knowing full well I wouldn't get a chance.to play for a few hours.

Edit: From what I gathered, that long waiting period was Greg getting an unholy choke hold on the oreDict and making it his own - then making screws and bolts and washers and wires and everything GT for each metal found.

Just out of curiosity, having never played a pack with GT yet: what exactly does "a long time" mean?
Somewhere between 5-8 minutes I'd guess. I haven't actually timed it. My computer's a reasonably competent i7 2600k quad.

Considering your play style I'm a tiny bit surprised you haven't tried GT yet. You might be interested to know that Blood Asp recently forked GT5 and added old goodies like the fusion reactor back.

Fusion in GT: unto itself the project is nothing remotely involved like your ReC fusion project, but I bet that from tree-punching to godlike power will still take you a lot longer in GT. Challenge :)

Yeah, and it also has certain other mods that it doesn't get along well with during startup. Binnie's for example apparently make things take drastically longer.

Dunno. Ever tried to build a.machine IRL without nuts and bolts?

Edit: I apologize. That was unnecessary. Yes, they are base level components in almost everything.

Not "all" of them. Since a lot of them are dynamically generated, you do get useless ones. The good news is that the GT tools also have a billion flavours based on the available metals. So if you have a bunch of, say, electrum doodads you can make yourself electrum tools.

I am confused. Are there different versions of GT5, and does the original one not have a fusion reactor? That was a main point of attraction.

As for not having tried it yet, you know I have some dislike for the early game. GT greatly increases the time it takes to get out of there. And tbh, I visited the GT thread on the IC2 forums and I keep wondering if I should really play a mod made by someone with such an attitude. GT has some attraction for me though, in that you're right. That's why I keep looking at it.

As of around a month ago, yes, there's two versions of GT5. Blood Asp decompiled the code with Greg's permission and has made massive additions.

Greg isn't working on it anymore, he's now working on GT6, but its not very playable yet unless you like testing early mechanisms. Greg never got around to re-implementing Fusion in GT5 sadly.

Yes, GT takes a while to get rolling especially if you're new to it. That's not attractive to everyone for sure, but I love it. Getting your first steel going is pretty awesome :)

Greg has a stereotypical gruff german attitude. The trick is to recognize that the malice it would infer in other cultures isn't really there. And when it is there, you just don't put up with it and deal it right back.

A good get-your-feet-wet pack is Infitech2 by Jason Mcray.

Well, I am German, and I can tell you that such an attitude isn't generally recognized as merely "gruff" around here. Anyway, no matter, I don't have to deal with the man himself, I just want to play his mod. Does Infitech2 have the fusion reactor? It is my goal to build one with every mod that offers one. Currently early on my way to Mekanism's.

Note I carefully applied the word "stereotype" :)

Trying to apply a single attitude to an entire nation is ridiculous, particularly one with a massive culture diversity.

Um, good question. I believe Jason intends to use that version in the next major iteration of Infitech but I'm not sure if he already is. @Jason McRay? Does Infitech2 use Blood Asp's version yet?

Currently no. It should come in the next minor update v2.2.1 (maybe v2.2.2 if I will encounter some issues). So it will be sooner than the big update

Start new world, punch tree, make planks, make pick, dig straight down(not worried about losing a wood pick) mine 3 stone, go up, make stone pick, get tons of stone, make stone tools, get bored of world, make new, repeat :p

In fairness the last time I actually played with Gregtech was in Ultimate. I know it's evolved into a completely different thing since then but if it's anything reminiscent to IC2e then i'd rather not.

Its not in the slightest reminiscent of IC2e. Totally different directions.

Even little things like the wrench-on-machines mechanic is way more elegant in GT.
