Hey guys, I was exploring the Nether, got lost, and as I hate the Nether, I popped on Creative mode to fly around and find my way out.
It got me wondering:
How many of you cheat in what is primarily a survival mode?

Whether that be /gamemode 1, using Cheat mode in NEI, using known bugs or exploits in mods, do you ever cheat, and why?

For me, I'll cheat if either
A: I have to start a new world because my last save was corrupted or destroyed and I don't want to go through the whole starting phase again
B: Many circumstances in the Nether (I really hate the Nether)
C: Occasionally toward the end of a very long build process when I find I'm actually just one or two ingredients short.

I'm curious to hear from you, and if you don't cheat, I'm curious to hear what motivates you to 'stay clean'.

For what it's worth, this thread is not meant to shame either party, I just want to hear opinions!

I do, largely in going into Creative for the first jump into the Nether to ensure the portal isn't, say, under a flow of lava. Since this is for a server and we have very disparate pings to it (it's physically in OVH's Quebec center and we have folks from Australia and New Zealand connecting in) I think this is a reasonable enough measure for their quality of life.

I occasionally also do other things, usually involving bug-hunting, so when I'm in that mode I obviously will drop in things to test such, although I throw them out afterwards. Since our group tends to have server resets in these in-between-pack times that are weekly or so, dropping in a couple useful things is something I consider acceptable during this period. Last week's shenanigans may have involved me spawning in various mobs to kill and acquire in my Morph so I could then chase people around. I'm a bit more principled when I know a world is going to stick around a long while, though. =)

Unless you're on a competitive server, the concept of "cheating" is entirely self-defined. You can really only cheat yourself.

For my playstyle, I try to minimize cheating and will only cheat if:

1. To work around or recover from a frustrating game bug or stupid mechanic, like an f'ing lossless wrench in f'ing lossless mode *still* causing an IC2 exp machine to drop a machine block or Generator. Grrr.....cheat myself in a replacement.

2. To shortcut something incredibly tedious that adds no fun to the game, like if I explore the map for hours trying to find a biome-specific item, and never actually find the damn biome. This used to happen a lot with BoP *and* ExtraBiomes installed. I could not for the life of me find a village to find a village to trade with to get Monastic drones. I got tired of pointless flying around, so I trashed 100 emeralds and cheated in some Monastics.

I also often do /time set 0 when it's night-time and I don't want to got to my bed in a far-away building for the Nth time.

However, *not* cheating when tempted to is often rewarding. For instance, I recently spent hours exploring a half-caved-in Overworld dungeon, trying in desperation to find the End portal. I almost gave up and cheated in a portal, but I finally found it. The reward was worth the effort in that case.

But, again, "cheating" in a non-competitive environment, especially when said honed "skills" are not really applicable anywhere else, is entirely up to each person.

I've been known to cheat in a new jetpack in order to recover my stuff (that I created properly) when I die. Once I get my old stuff I get rid of the cheated pack. It's usually in the nether. (Fricken firebats).

One world I cheated in some chicken eggs to spawn some chickens afterI flew around for 1/2 hour without finding any and really wanted to start making some arrows.

I use no mob griefing and keep inventory on ssp. I will also cheat for things I don't like, i.e. the new dartcraft force wrench in 1.6.4 requires liquid force. My answer? F*** that. I proceed to cheat in all the things necessary to give it liquid force and leave it there to only ever use for that purpose.

Do I feel bad? Not a lick.

Hi, I'm Hambeau. I'm a cheater.

I create new worlds in Survival Mode (single player) but allow cheats and include the Bonus Chest.

I go into creative mode to fly about and scout for my current favorite starting base, a Natura Redwood. If I find a suitable Plains biome and no tree within an hour or so, I go back to that plain and give myself 81 saplings (the best chance for a 13 block diameter tree, in my experience) before going back to survival to dig my starting hole, establish a small farm, usually using a pond or river as a water source, planting my seedlings and digging my "Stairway to bedrock" (no apologies to Led Zeppelin) for resources. If I find any structures I will waypoint them and teleport later.

That's the extent of my cheating. I swear.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Cheating?
Any 3rd party mod/hack to give what can be done through legit gameplay can go. Or something which makes it unnecessarily easier without any real cost/skill to balance it.
So a minimap mod offers cave-finding feature and no-one minds- yet an Xray texture to do the same thing and everyone calls it cheating?
Theres no difference in it.

Minimaps, waypoints, f3 screen GPS (why is a debug mode in a "final release" when it gives such an immersion breaking advantage??).
Use a compass & position of the sun/moon, clouds to navigate. Building towers/markers and relying on landmarks ect.

Beds are a pretty big thing too- skip out half the game. What's the actual difference between that and /time set day?

Hmm, only times I take the route is when suffering some sort of lag-induced problem due to a slow computer or as previously mentioned, mod bugs.

If I have to hide myself in some dinky little hole until dawn day after day, I still feel like doing things right. Bonus chest at world creation merely because it adds a bit of extra variation to first starting. I've done that aspect more than enough since all the way back to alpha MC. :p

Only cheat if i lose something due a bug. Like the dam arcane workbench that give half the items it's supposed to, when you right click to take something out...

That's a pretty exteme position. I'm assuming you sleep in R/L and skip the night, right ? So, why is something that's acceptable in R/L not acceptable in MC ?

As for the "challenge" of not using a bed, that's laughable. Just stay indoors and/or keep mining. I seriously don't understand the bed hate.

I really hate mining, so I usually cheat in a quarry, and related supplies like power, to start out. Use the quarry to get some starting resources, then get to work. Oh, and I use creative to fly around and find where I want to build.

Yes- minecraft is a perfect simulation of real life. I'm pretty certain you shower/bathe regularly in R/L- so obviously you setup the same in MC. Likewise the wooden pickaxe you made with your bare hands from ripped up tree is perfectly capable of tearing up stone. Playing IC2 and Redpower must certainly qualify you as an electrician right?
Minecraft isnt a simulator, and realism is somewhat of a dirty word as people often take the part of 'realistic' they want and ignore the walking dead and exploding phallus-like creatures.

Haven't used beds for ages now- theres a fair bit more than just 'stay inside'
Solar power? Might want a few backup systems for rain/night
(somehow sleeping also screws with the weather)
Mostly its skipping the night-time monsters. It feels like having an off switch.
Also making the outside area relatively safe (lighting/fences).
I wouldn't say I hate beds, I just like playing what they cut out- they don't really fit with what I want to do.
I guess thats kinda what a sandbox styled game is about.

When I cheat:

Other player accidentally kills me with a sword/arrow that does 12 hearts of damage
Death by lava from block updates when I join the nether
Sometimes if I spawn in an ocean or similar I'll fly somewhere
Spawnkill (whether it be mobs, lava, whatever)
Bugs deleting my items
Bugs killing me (no, not from the Twilight Forest. in-code bugs)
I'll /tp if I'm in a place where I insta-freeze due to an XBXL bug
/tp if I am extremely far away and lagging the server
Broken game mechanic (like what someone said about lossless still giving a machine block instead of the machine)
And I usually don't spawn in items, often XP because I use Ars Magica, and it is a royal pain to get a decent amount of Mana.

That's a pretty exteme position. I'm assuming you sleep in R/L and skip the night, right ? So, why is something that's acceptable in R/L not acceptable in MC ?
Lot's of things are like this, treecap, mining taking ages, disease, etc. Beds are different from /time set because they also set your spawn.

Do you remove the Quarry after? I could never picture myself doing that, as I like mining, and typically play with Gregtech, so the quarry is quite expensive, and with other mods that offer that (turtles = stone, glass, redstone, diamonds, sticks, iron, minions = like 8 xp, hammer = some iron, etc)

So a minimap mod offers cave-finding feature and no-one minds- yet an Xray texture to do the same thing and everyone calls it cheating?
Theres no difference in it.
Yes there is. Xray gives you the ability to see ores, while a cave map just shows you where to find a cave, and helps you make sure your mine is dug properly.

I usually turn mobGriefing false and keepInventory true and then give myself a manyllum hammer and excavator and start a GIANT branch mine somewhere... also i make this 14x14 starter hole with the filler and make the walls stone with an 8x8 clear glass window on top... yay i know its bad.

Why don't you just find more awesome ways to mine? You know it takes shockingly few resources to start out steves carts miners that do a really, really good job? I'm doing a private game with my wife, and I did this as an experiment (just made a tunneler that did work for me); it worked really well. You can even get a really basic miner on a wooden hull!

People (including myself, before I played around with them) really take Steves Carts and Railcraft for granted.
