Hello! I am looking to start up a FTB Direwolf20 server for my friends, but when I set up the server and was testing things out I found something the rest of the group wouldn't like. When you press the E button to open inventory, on the right hand side of the page is a large group of what looks to be every item you can create in the Direwolf20 mod pack. Shift clicking will give you infinite resources of the selected item as well. I found that by pressing O I could get it to disappear, but I was wondering what mod this is and how I would get rid of it for my player base, they are looking for a legitimate server with no infinite items or the like, but I love the FTB pack and how it handles mods in general. Thanks for looking!

That is actually one of the mods called "NEI" or "Not enough Items".

NEI has 3 modes:
1: Recipe mode - clicking on an item on the right allows you to see the recipe of that item, pressing U gives you its uses.
2: Utility mode - same as above, adds a "delete" function which allows you to delete items from your inventory. Also adds a "magnet mode" function which draws items to your person upon use.
3: Cheat mode - clicking on an item gives it to you, shift and right click modify the amount given.

You have to note that you have to be an OP on a server for the cheat mode item-giving to work.

In conclusion, as long as your friends aren't "OPs" on your server, you have nothing to worry about, I am not 100% sure about magnet mode, but I'm sure someone on this forum is :)

EDIT: It might be worth noting that you can swap between modes after pressing "settings" on the bottom left and then mode on the screen that follows :)

What you are noticing is Not Enough Ideas (NEI). You can only spawn items in if you are an OPerator. Otherwise, NEI gives you the ability to sort through all of the items, and pressing "u" while over an item will show you its usages, and "r" will show you how to craft it. You can also click on the arrow in most machines that normally fills up with progress to see all crafts that machine can do.

You could remove NEI from the modpack and force your users to use a custom version of FTB, but so long as you don't OP all of your users (and only make trusted users operators), you should be fine and it would be a horrible blow to not have NEI.

Getting rid of NEI would be quite an inconvenience. While not in cheat mode, you can left click an item from that list to see all available recipes for it, or right click an item to see the uses of that item. You can do the same from your inventory with R for recipe and U for uses.

The '?' next to the recipes allows you to show a ghost image of the recipe in the crafting grid so you can fill in complex recipes a little more easily. Or you can shift right click the '?' and it will fill in the crafting grid for you with the items you have in your inventory.

With all the extra items and blocks these packs add, you'd be doing a huge disservice to yourself and your player base by disabling it.

I like utility mode, magnet and delete are rather handy without being cheaty imo

Delete is extremely useful, but magnet always felt a bit "cheaty" to me, although I am not sure if it really is cheaty, or if it just feels that way because of how awesomely useful it is.

Actually, as an aside, I wonder if you can disable modes entirely so they cannot even be selected. I'll have to look through the config file later today.

lol, it can get more annoying than it is useful at times... such as when throwing things in a crucible before it's boiling, when walking around in the morning (I DON'T F-ING WANT THAT ROTTEN FLESH!!!)

Back before FTB I believe another modpack with NEI had the other modes locked by default. The only way to re-enable them was to dig through the configs and find the setting.

Sounds like a reason to not use that all that often, eh? Imagine the fun if you accidentally break a barrel of cobblestone! At least extradimensional barrels only drop 64 stacks in total.

Ah yeah, that is right, I do remember Technic had that. Ok, time to dig through the config files to see if I can disable utility mode!

Thank you sirs and madames! This is a very healthy community with a large group of very nice people! Mister KirinDave, where would I go to look at such? I will do so post haste! Is there a guide in there on how to import a plain minecraft server into the modded area? Again, thank you all! We are not very technically minded folk, but we love playing!

Whilst I am not Sir Dave of Kirin, I can answer that question for you. You would go to the modification's homepage here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/909223-145146-smp-chickenbones-mods/

Scroll down to the NEI section, and read away. It is wonderful!

In the latest direwolf pack utility mode magnet is totally cheating because it makes an in-game item whit the same function useless (Reliquary coin of fortune).

It seems the range of the coin when shift-clicked held is actually a tiny bit longer than normal magnet mode. Which is awesome. :)
