Well the day has come. I never thought I would get here. I, just like lot of other Minecraftians, have always been stuck on outdated weak hand me down systems. For personal reasons (cough car cough) I haven't had the spare dough to spend on a nice new system. Which in the case of Minecraft hasn't been necessary since I can play classic on an even older system, and the one I have now I could even run a better texture pack, but my enriched experience with Minecraft has always stopped there. Once I discovered feed the beast my dreams of ever playing with a texture pack died, but I can tolerate the 16x16 graphics for the awesomeness of all the mods.

Until today...

I swear it's like half these mod producers have systems even a celebrity wouldn't own. Stuff has continued to grow and demand more and more resources. Minecraft is not a bodybuilder. It's fat, and not like sumo wrestler fat, like need a crane to move around and widen doorways fat. And they just made it fatter. So what's my reward for being a loyal follower of Feed the Beast?

"You need 64 bit Java to run more than 1GB of ram on Java, please go out and buy a new computer to enjoy the awesomeness any further..."

I like modded minecraft but geez I wish someone would really go out on a performance programming binge. I guess now my choices are Play 1.5 FTB for eternity, or uninstall.

My son is using my old computer, E6750\6gb\9800GT that system was under $1000(Au) when new and now it's 6 years or so old, it runs FTB fine (well my roll yer own pack anyways which has more mods than quite a few of the FTB packs)
Yeah you do need 64bit java, Win7 64 bit is fairly easy to get hold of and will run on any system with a semi decent processor and 4gb ram (which my sons comp was running up until a couple weeks ago) so yeah it won't cost a bomb to get a system that will run FTB quite well.

Yeah I'm below that ATM. Believe me, if my car ever stops breaking down, one of my first investments will be a better PC. Unless by then the new mods need 16GB of ram in which case I'd be screwed again.

When I drool I imagine playing Minecraft all the time with Old Faithful 256x256 texture pack, with Realistic Water and Dynamic Shadows :O

I would suggest trying FTB Lite, or perhaps removing the more memory intensive mods from some of the larger packs. There is no reason you can't play 1.6.4 FTB without a 64-bit system, you just need to "trim the fat" to get it to run.

Yeah but FTB lite doesn't have any of the mods I would really like to try, or already enjoy playing with. Like Thaumcraft 4 (really want to check out) Industrialcraft or Buildcraft and my storage favorite: Applied Energistics.

Yeah, t'isn't the mod makers' or FTB's fault if you try to run 100+ mods on an old system. Any one mod usually doesn't add to much strain, but incrementally it does add up. Pick 10 or so mods you just can't live without, and you should be fine. Then add additional "Would be nice" mods 1 at a time until your system cries uncle and then stop.

Personally, I never have quite understood most of the current packs "let's throw every mod and the kitchen sink into one pack" mentality. I rarely run more than 20 or so at once, p;us the utility mods like Inventory Tweaks and NEI and such. More than that, and it just gets confusing.

This is going to be deleted by the mods for sure but you have serious entitlement issue. Modders made the mods, for free, and this is the kind of crap they get from you because you can't afford or wouldn't spend the money to buy a slightly better comp? Geez...

Are you sure you don't have a 64bit system? Just because it came with 32bit Windows, doesn't mean it's got a 32bit processor and 64bit Windows can't be installed.

Though yeah, the 1.6.4 packs finally got me to shift off my 32bit OS install, and I'd rather not've done.

Do you have a PC from 2007 or a Netbook?!? Its an unwritten standard that computers (Laptops and Desktops) sold within the last few years have 4GB of ram. Which for the users is cut down to 3 if you're using Windows 7 and 2 if you're using Windows 8.
