This is why we can't have nice things.
I am against packs simply being updated to a new MC version. Why? Because you never have a reason to try new mods, and you never see the other amazing mods.
There are plenty of reasons to try out new mods. A lot of people will get bored sooner or later doing the same stuff over and over again and will want to try out new mods. Also the fact that others are discussing the new popular mods and what they hear others say about new mods will make them convert. We can always have nice things.
I am definitely not against packs being simply updated to a new MC version as well. With an update, mods add new content which help to tease people still using old packs out to try new things which brings them to use new mods. Also, if they enjoy playing with that modpack more than any other, who are we to force them to stop playing the packs that they want to?
An updated version of Ultimate I don't think is truly possibly, since project red isn't yet a full replacement for redpower, and gregtech has changed so much it doesn't play well with most other mods anymore.
Watch DireWolf20 let's play series season 6 and watch a lets play for monster, you could find out the differences while watching, in Direwolfs modpack, there is a useful mod called morth which is quite cool!
