Isnt there a mod that adds turrets to the game for defense?
Couple, actually. One is called the Turret mod and adds a handful of cool turrets, but mainly for PvE. Another is the TF2 Turret mod, and I don't know if it'd even work for PvP. The modded Father Toast has a turret mod, but again, simple it kinda isn't, and seems to be only for PvE.

Really, though, OP, you could just use MFFS to protect your base at chokepoints and against ICBMs if you are worried about that, with a few fortron generators and a Railcraft steel tank to store the liquid fortron. Yes, it's a liquid. Yes, that means one can defend many places with a single source of fortrons.

pneumatic craft has some nice defence mekanism, blood magic also has a lot things that can help you.

I do not wish to expand my power in more magmatic engines. I think it is quite a nuisance to replace the pumps. I do have a good steve carts farm going and some production of biomass. What energy do you think is best to use in the long run?

Biofuel is a sure fire way to go, you can either fire up combustion engines on it or you can go with boilers. Boilers are not easy to build at first because of their needed equipment and they will start up with very little steam being produced when it reach 100 C so you need quite a tank of Biofuel to startup the boiler before it at full "power". Due to the updated Railcraft it now changed as well of LP boilers being more effeicent than the HP boilers (they used to be linear in fuel to steam production now the HP have a 25% penalty).

PortalGun adds weak and unpredictable Portal Turrets that die if you touch them, and RotaryCraft adds a number of rather powerful turrets (including the Railgun) that I haven't messed with yet, but look really cool.
