An interesting point. If I think about it, that would have happened to BC power, but probably wouldn't have happened to IC2 power, because the value of IC2 power is tied to the built-in storage blocks and transformers.
I think a bigger reason is that EU is/was largely tied to one mod and thus not subject to the same sort of power creep forces that RF - and anything else forced as a standard - would be.

...To be fair, I cannot help but be somewhat pleased at this idea that enforced standards, ultimately, become self-defeating.

Back in the days before reika changed the power conversion rate for RF to shaft power you could hook up about 4 64x lava generators to a magnetostatic, which was then hooked up to a rock melter. This would produce a positive lava gain which could then be used to power more 64x lava generators, or other things for that matter as many mods can be powered through lava.
