only use for lava is the smeltery but that can be fulfilled by a single crucible
Yeah, at least once you get the ticon multi-blocks up there really isn't much need for more than two crucibles..... though by that time I tend to have 2-3 extras to put to work as I like to use a few for the "mini-smelter" stage.

Although, once you have your weapon, excavator/shovel etc you don't really need the smeltery thattttt much, only if you need metals in liquid form pretty much. (I probably missed something obvious you can use them for :p) You can just use a pulverizer once pnumaticcraft is set up to get the machine frame

There are some pretty useful alloys which cannot be made in the crucibles, and many of us like having access to quit a few servos, for which the ticon multi-blocks are quit handy..... at least once the nerf on the stones gets implemented.

The AE grinder is a nice early method for grinding ores down to dusts for alloys.
I have no need for that because I have a pulverizer-redstone furnace setup, but it does prove to be useful when starting a regular modded world, or a modpack like crash landing or agrarian skies
