Ladies and gentlemen, my name is SirMarksomnian and I am pleased to announce that we are building a factory in Direwolf20 pack V5 and we want a cool elevator. There is a catch: The elevator must NOT be an elevator. The best one will be used in our build. and the winner will be invited to our server to help building. The winner will also be featured in the Creation Tour. Rules and ideas below.
Rules:
  • The device must move players between different levels.
  • The elevator must not have any resemblance to an elevator.
  • The shaft area can only be 10x10, space in another area is unlimited.
  • Please submit your: IGN, at least 3 screenshots and preferably a YouTube video. (The more we see, the better a decision we can make.)
Examples:
Allowed:
  1. PortalGun portals
  2. Mystcraft portals
  3. IC2 teleporters (if used, please use them creatively)
NOT allowed:
  1. Frame elevator
  2. Piston elevator
Thanks!

Thaumcraft Arcane Levitators. Have two shafts, one for going up, another for going down. Looks really futuristic. (If you played Planetside 2, you know what I'm talking about.)

Minecart going on a vertical elevator track. I don't know if Traincraft cars work with them, if so, a flat car could look quite nice.

I built a rail elevator once on a server, the circuitry was quite intricate, but I was happy with the final product.

As for levitators, they work great, but they can only take you up a static number of floors. It works great for a 2 floor building, but any more than that and its just a mess.

If the building is a sort of complex (not just a skyscraper) then the two coolest options would be a automated rail system or a mystcraft nexus. The rail system would be much more expensive and require some pretty intense RP logic, but it'd be worth it

Hello again everybody! Sorry for the pretty much nonexistant information on it, I will put up screenshots and other infos soon. As for deadlines, well, there isn't one yet, so go to the kitchen, get an extra-large sips of creative juice, and start building!

I will put up pictures of the factory so far so you can integrate. And, zooqooo, unfortunately it is a multi-tiered skyscraper.
Good night world (its almost 11PM)![DOUBLEPOST=1359409583][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yes, but how would you get down? I know, I know, I shouldn't bemaking this into a discussion, but who gives?

Arcane levitators work both ways, slowing the fall rate of anyone below them.

You could have a 2x2 shaft with pistons to control the roof/floor of where to get off.

Think of it this way, each floor has a button that says up/down. If you press it, it'll turn the levitators on the bottom floor off and turn the ones on the top floor on, allowing you to float down to your desired floor. Next you select a floor button. This decides which pistons to power. So you hit floor 2 and since it's on down mode it closes pistons on the floor level of the second floor. You step into the shaft and float down to the second floor. After you exit, the elevator returns to its default settings when a timer finishes.

Next you go to floor 5, so you press the button for floor 5 and pistons shut on the ceiling level of floor 5 allowing you to float up and exit the shaft onto floor 5. Afterwards it resets those pistons and waits for someone else to use it.

You'll need a control room to wire this and a bunch of wireless frequencies ( or extensive wiring around the shaft). The levitators need to be stacked to improve their levitation range.

Hrm... thats interesting, and new to me. I wonder if they could create something to do this in an inverted fasion? Like levitators you place on the ceiling that lift you up when you press a button. Oh the posibilities!

Thaumcraft levitators recently got a lot more flexibility in the most recent release. Stacks of them stack in distance of effect (2 stacked levitators lift you 20 spaces, 2 stacked levitators let you fall safely for 20 spaces) and redstone signals sensibly effect the stack. Given this, it's fairly easy to make a 4x2/6x2 space for "up" and "down". As for how you "stop" at floors that are not exactly 10 spaces up, my advice is to use pistons as stopping blocks! Wireless redstone or redpower control will make it easy to set a "stop" at each floor for the up and down side that simply blanks the floor.

I kinda want to build this now. It's such a funny twist on the normal elevator concept. I've already used levitators to make an "invisible bridge" in one of my bases and they're very surprising.

Levitators aren't all that fast. If you make the floors of a decent height, it shouldn't be a problem to get off at the desired floor by simply walking off the airflow.

Currently providing a red stone signal only deactivates them, but you should suggest an inverted functionality to Azanor in the thaumcraft forum.

The piston idea is really cool, but the wiring would be hellish

Actually, could you not have regular old tripwire + a select floor button AND-ed together to stop the airflow ? Maybe with some pistons to give you a floor to land on?

People clearly aren't thinking outside the box. I still see elevators!

Personally, I like a little chance of death in my elevator travel.

Here's an idea for a 2x1 (claustrophobic) "elevator", though it could be expanded:
1. You put a Portal Spawner frame on the floor (no portal initially).
2. You put a Portal Spawner frame on the ceiling of your "elevator shaft" (always on).
3. You put some buttons in the 1st floor. Or a Computer/Advanced Monitor with a color screen. These control what floor you want to go to.
4. You press button and the Portal Spawner instantly generates on the floor. You are teleported to the top of the shaft.
5. You are now in free-fall and will die if not intercepted.
6. The button sends a signal to a sticky piston (via WR-CBE) that pushes out a platform. You will still probably die if you hit this platform.
7. On top of the platform you see there is an Aerial Faith Plate. Hallelujah! You hit the Aerial Faith Plate (which re-calculates your falling damage) and are gently flung forward to your desired floor.
8. The elevator resets for it's next victim customer.

Going down:
-Easy idea is a button that pushes out an AFP on the 1st floor and you "fall" down the shaft. Could have timing issues with disastrous results.
-Other idea is a button which opens a piston trapdoor below you (on every floor) as soon as you hit the button, at the elevator entrance "waiting area", and you fall into a Mystcraft portal linked to the 1st floor. You then pick your new floor (my favorite and easiest/best)
-Last idea, and more complex, is you repeat the 1st floor setup on every floor. Except with a separate sliding platform in the elevator shaft (so there are two platforms, one blank, and one covered with Aerial Faith Plates). This platform then disappears (slides out from under you) and you fall to the bottom where you hit the portal and are teleported to the top where step 5 continues.

Aerial Faith Plate:
-These occupy a 2x1 space, so you'd still need a Frame, so you have a 2x1 object for the sticky piston to attach to. This violates the contest rules, even though the frame isn't used as an elevator.
-You can put 2 next to each-other and have a more comfy 2x2 elevator.
-You'd need to set them to vertical strength 1, and horizontal strength 1. In Beta A there was a bug where they'd reset sometimes to the default (3,3), could be disastrous.
-While I've made travel systems using a sequence of them, I'm not sure how they respond to being moved.

Negatives:
-I don't know how well this idea would work with lag.
-This idea is very, very griefer-friendly.

I have been thinking on a method to get between my underground base and an airship i plan to build ~120 tiles above it. I know I want a retractable shaft of some kind to carry energy and items between them, and an actual elevator type mechanism. Due to the distance it needs to be at least semi-speedy, and coolness is obviously important. I was planning to just do a railcraft elevator track, but now I wonder if I could create a levitator system that keeps pushing out new levitators as you rise up, causing continuous rise. I want to fit the whole apparatus into a 5x5 area, but if I can get the wiring into a 4x5 (including frames) I could use the remaining 1x5 for the various transports and the levitator.

The big difficulty with my implementation is that the pillar needs to be constructed automatically, as I have far more blocks to rise than I have vertical storage space for the shaft to retract into. That means no wireless redstone since afaik there is no way to automatically configure their signals. Bundled cable should be able to do the job though.

No... they have a Green side and a Yellow side. There is no way to turn them. Green pushes up 10 blocks Yellow slow falls down 10 blocks. You can stack them to get more push/fall that is about it.

You can use an Redstone single to turn them on and off to contorl a stack to have mulitple heights which is nice going up.. not so much going down.

hmm.. step down into a mystcraft crystal ring. Have a binary lever control for floor selection on the wall with a button to activate. The selection controls which book is inserted into an intra-dimensional linking book which transports you to the floor of your choice. You could also have "hidden" selections which take you other places kinda like a wonkavator. Just for fun, you could have the "elevators" drop you through various portals in void ages into other portals which eventually drop you through to your destination. You could also hook the selection up to a tainted redstone chip to sometimes take you to the floor you want directly, and other times, drop you through various ages before you arrive at the right destination, and every so often take you to a random location.. maybe drop you through an MFFS field that pulls all of one item out of your inventory, or completely disarms you and after you land on your floor, the items lost get "returned" by sending them through the portal (or via ender chest) to land near you after you stop on your floor.

The possibilities are really only limited by the imagination.
