I have one word for you - Fastcraft.

http://forum.industrial-craft.net/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=10820

I received the tip about this mod today because I've been complaining non-stop recently about my issues with boats and how the game always seems to crash it into the shoreline even tho I'm nowhere near the shoreline. I installed the Fastcraft jar, and oh my goodness, all my lag issues and chunk issues and boating issues seem to be fixed at long last.

Give it a try, maybe it will help you too? I just dropped the .jar file into the mods directory of whatever pack I'm playing and fired up FTB. Simple as that.

Edit to add: I noticed a lot of missing chunks when I first started my new world with the mod installed. However, this is only temporary and it seems once those initial chunks are loaded in (takes a few minutes), then Minecraft runs smooth as silk. This is reported in the thread I posted above:

"One thing I've noticed since I installed Fastcraft, when I load a world, I must pause it in order for majority of the chunks to load visually."

"Hmm that may be a side effect of loading the chunks a lot faster while the actual initial chunk render cache building is not faster, effectively spamming it quite some. MC possibly doesn't build the chunk render caches in a suitable order, I may look into fixing that"

Then I'd have to guess that you're not allocating enough memory to java perhaps? But that's getting out of my league so I'll just throw it out there. Are you using any custom java arguments in the FTB launcher? How much memory did you set the slider to?

I could fix by removing the mod ChickenChunks, unfortunately I'm going to need at some point and I know a similar mod to leave chunks loaded.

This happens all the time in regular and modded Minecraft, even on beast computers. Hit F3+A. It usually helps.
