Can't find any good caves!

So I am trying to get some ore and diamond and I can't find any deep caves. The caves I do find end very early and I cant get any lava for a smeltary up and running and I cant find any diamonds. I am brnach mining at around 12 in the Y.

But whats the best way to find some good caves!

They are generated completely random. So the more you look the higher the chance of finding one.

However using a minimap mod like Zan's and using its cave function will allow caves to show up on your minimap. Then you can just dig a vertical shaft and test different depths by plugging the hole above you with a block(lava filled caves will show up). Also a good indicator of caves is the mob radar(also on minimap). This will give an indication of normal unlit caves locations.
