If an item is coming from a harvester, directed through a diamond pipe, and into a DSU, why would the item in pipe decide to bypass an available destination and eject itself out of the pipe instead?

The diamond pipe is correctly directing the item down the right pipe. There is available space in the dsu. The item is coming in from the top and the top is set for in in the dsu gui. instead, it continues and jumps right out of the pipe.

Buildcraft item pipes are poorly designed, but maybe there is a reason this time that I'm missing?

Use insertion pipes on top of any inventory you want to "force" an item to go into. In the case of DSUs, if the item will go in, it will; if not, it will move down to the next pipe.

nope. the item can go in but half the time it won't. I will check out this insertion pipe.

Use conveyors? BC pipes can dump onto MFR conveyors, it's not 100% but it is around 95% and the conveyors work perfectly with MFR machines since well they are from the same mod. Or just use conveyors in the first place the routing abilities are quite good. If you are using AE as well, a transition plane works nicely with the conveyors to get your items into the AE network a plane at the end of a conveyor is pretty much 100% effective in my experience.

Use logistics pipes, the basic ones. Much better networking than diamond pipes. Esp. with DSUs that can only take 1 item type anyways.

Is the DSU empty? I always put 1 of the type that needs to go in in on before hand. Are the DSU sides correctly configured for IN where the pipe is connecting?

If the item is travelling down in the pipe and then ejected then the diamond pipe is working, but the DSU is not accepting the item. I sometimes have to relog to get DSUs working if I have a lot of them with an extensive network around it, did you try that?

I take it the diamond pipe is attached tot he inventory? If not, try that, otherwise, make sure that you specify it in the filter. :)

Did you change the side the pipe was on to an input side? I had the same problem with a quarry in Ultimate spewing cobble everywhere out of the pipe instead of into the DSU, and it was because I had forgotten to adjust that.

The harvester is self outputting so I can just use a gold pipe. there is no input side for say. Not like a wooden pipe.

No, no, I meant the DSU. See which side of that the gold pipe is going into and make sure it's designated as an input side in the DSU's interface. By default, the top and bottom sides are where you would pipe the items in.
